Cloth Diapering

WWYD

So, the other day my MIL asked if she will be able to use sposies when she watches the baby.  She hasn't said much about our decision to CD, but obviously doesn't want to participate.  I love her dearly but will not be spending extra money on sposies for her occassional time alone with our LO.  She asked me in front of our Bunco group and I just responded by saying we would have to talk about it later.  Do I let her buy her own sposies or try to convert her with pockets??

Re: WWYD

  • Once she sees them, she may change her mind. I think my mom thought they would be more work then what they actually are. If it was just an occasionally thing, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If was a long term thing, like looking after Lo when you return to work, then I'd have an issue. After all, your the mom - you make the rules.

  • You could do both.  Have the pockets available and show her how to use them, but give her the option to purchase 'sposies if she really wants to.  No harm to LO to switch back and forth, and no extra cost to you.

  • I would provide cloth diapers when she watches the baby. If she wants to be crazy and buy her own, I'd be fine with that. I'm not going to go out of my way to spend money to accommodate someone that's just being stubborn.
  • I would honestly make her use CD...I mean what's the big deal!  My mom does just fine with CD and actually likes it.  I was allergic to diapers so my mom is used to them.  She also thought they were going to be like the diapers she used to put on me.  When she saw the ones I use on my LO she was super excited :)  I would have her look at them and explain how they are used.  Its not like she'll be washing them.

     This.

My mom and MIL watch my LO 3-4 days a week when I'm at work.  We started CDing at 4 months, so we still had leftover disposables from then.  I told them when we first started that they were welcome to use the sposies instead, but I wasn't buying more when they ran out/my LO grew out of them  So I suggested that they try to get used to the CD's.

My mom still makes nasty comments about the CDs all the time, but she does use them.  I think she does it more because my MIL is really excited about them and she doesn't want to look bad compared to her.  My mom always asks me why I don't keep sposies around "just in case".  My reply: just in case of what?  I always tell her she's welcome to buy some to use if she doesn't like the CD's but she hasn't done that yet.

My feeling is that this is my child and I think CD's are better for her, so that's what I prefer to use.  However, I am grateful to have free childcare, so I don't want to force them to do something they aren't comfortable with.

  • Thanks ladies... I really don't mind if she uses sposies, but I'm not buying them.  I will try to convert her though (not with prefolds!) :)
