Late Term and Child Loss

Another 2nd tri loss question from me...

Hope no one is getting sick of me... Writing to you girls is helping a ton... My cramps and bleeding had gotten better.. Then today my cramps got severe and I passed some tissue like stuff literally the size of my hand.. Called the dr and they think it's tissue...is this normal? I delivered my baby and his placenta... Just the size of this was a little worrisome...

Re: Another 2nd tri loss question from me...

  • I had a third tri loss, but that seems large to me.  After all of my pregnancies I was told if I pass a clot larger than the size of a quarter I need to be checked out.  Did they want to see you?  If you are worried, I would personally call and insist on being checked on.  Extra tissue isn't a good thing.  I don't want to worry you, but I find it better to be extra cautious.  Don't worry about asking questions! That's what we're here for.

  • I don't want to scare you either, but please go get checked. I had a late postpartum hemorrhage after my DD was born (4 weeks postpartum). I had passed a clot the size of the palm of my hand that morning & then the bleeding stopped altogether. Then hours later, it was like a dam broke. I could have bled to death. Better to be safe! Please keep us posted.

  • The doctor just said monitor for more bleeding.. It's weird cause I'm not actually bleeding that much.. Just passed those huge clots.. And am crampy.. She surprisingly did not seem that worried.. She said if I filled a pad in an hour go to the er...

  • I didnt have a pregnancy loss but 4 weeks after my son was born i was laboring in the shower. I was dilated and my body was passing clots the size of chicken breasts or larger. I went to the hospital and they had to do a D&C, I had retained placenta. I would have it checked just in case, when I went in they told my husband I might have to have a hysterectomy if the blood loss continued. GL!

After my late loss, I didn't have anything like this BUT after my m/c in the fall, I had a D&C. Then several days later, I had pretty painful cramping, was passing clots that were about palm-sized and had some bleeding (didn't fill a pad an hour though). We decided to go to the ER just to be safe and it turns out I had retained tissue and now an infection as well, so I had a 2nd D&C pretty much right away with IV antibiotics.  FWIW, the OB I initially saw for the cramping and clots wasn't concerned at all either (my usual OB was out).  The other OB who did my surgery (and who was the on-call OB that night) was super concerned.

In this type of case, I vote for better safe than sorry and go into the ER.  Big (((hugs))). I'm sorry you are going through all of this.

  • I didn't have a pregnancy loss, I had an infant loss.  But after birth about 5 days PP I wasn't bleeding at all.  Then I passed a clot the size of a large deli peperoni (sorry for the image).  I went to the OB and he said that when you aren't bleeding alot the blood will poll in the dips of your ute and when they come out they are all clotted and clumpy.

It has happened to me several times since, if you are nervous though and if it continues alot then I wouldn't hesitate to go get checked, they can't refuse to see you afterall even if they don't think it is necessary.

  • I had this almost a week after my 2nd loss. It was quite painful and I felt the pain in my back and lower stomach. It almost felt like a contraction.. I would run to the bathroom and clumps would fall out. I almost had to push them out. It was a bit scary. Luckily for me, the large clots only lasted a day or so and then it was over and back to light bleeding.

I wouldn't worry unless you continue to have large clots for a few days straight.

ETA: I also called the doctor and she was not concerned. She said to watch the bleeding and if it gets to more then a pad an hour to get checked. She said it could possibly be some left over tissue or some clotting from the blood pooling. If you are really concerned, request to be checked out.

  • When is you pp check?  I had some of what you are describing and when I went in 4 weeks later, they did an u/s and found I had retained some very large clots and a little of one of the placentas (even though they thought I had delivered all of both.)  I had to have a D & C.

  • What is with the "pad an hour" thing? I don't know why they tell us this. I never filled a pad an hour up until I hemorrhaged but by then it was "call 911" time. I too had retained placenta. When I had called my Dr. to ask about the clots I was passing, he wasn't concerned.
