Apraxia of speech

Tell me about it please.

There are things that make me think my DD may have this and things that don't. Anyone have a child with it?

Re: Apraxia of speech

  • My son had it.  When he was 1 years old I tried to get him help and I kept being brushed off with people telling me there was nothing wrong with him.

Shortly before he was two and was still not talking I had the school district come out for an eval.  I was told his speech was delayed and they could offer me a 1x per month session with someone that worked on the early intervention level.  I could have done a better job that she did.

The Ped kept telling me that because my son was "a good walker he was a slow talker"  I didn't buy that.

So, I took him to a private SLP and paid OOP for 2x seesions lasting 45 minutes.  They dx him with Apraxia and an expressive speech delay.

They did an amazing job with him.  A few weeks before he turned three he was talking up a storm and graduated from speech.  He's 3 1/2 now and literally does not stop talking.  Ever.  If he's awake he has something to say and his vocabulary is advanced for his age.

I know that I'm fortuante since some children don't out grow Apraxia.  I sometimes wonder if he actually had it.  I felt though that I would rather do too much even if it wasn't needed that not enough if it was needed.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have,

  • My DD is Apraxic.  She was officially diagnosed around 3, but we knew alot sooner than that.  At 18 months she only had a handful of sounds or she would say a word once and we would never hear it again, so we started speech through early intervention.  She did alot of pointing and a grunting noise.  She spoke her first true words around 2 years old, but her tongue seemed to be in the wrong place.  Around 3 years old she was using complete sentences (she was also going to speech therapy 3 times a week), but difficult to understand.  Now she is 4 1/2 years old and doing well (only going to ST once a week).  She still struggles with blends or if she's talking too fast or overwelmed she will lose sounds.
