Live-In Nanny ?

Hi, I mostly lurk on the boards around here but just found out I am expecting #2 and will have 2 under 2.  I also currently work full time and will continue to after my next maternity leave.  I am worried about the cost of daycare with 2 so I have been thinking about a nanny instead.  I have also read that a live-in nanny may take a lower salary since their room and board is taken care of.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Pros/Cons?  Do you usually have to provide them with their own care (to use only when caring for kids or whenever they want?)  Any info or experience would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Re: Live-In Nanny ?

  • I am a full time live-out nanny right now, but did a live-in situation once. It was OK, but the biggest thing that I had an issue with was drawing the line between who's care the children were under. Technically my day ended at 6pm, but since I didnt actually leave the house, care for the kids never really ended. The kids didnt know who to go to for things, me or the parents, and I think the parents had a hard time with their kids turning to someone else for help. I had a separate entrance to my living area, and it was somewhat separated from the rest of the house, so if I had guests it wasnt a problem, and I had a kitchen so I did my own grocery shopping and cooking. If you do not have a living situation like that, I can see it getting tricky having another adult in your space. When I was off duty I often felt like I was intruding on their family time, but I lived their too, so it was inevitable.

     I think a live-in situation could work, but I prefer live-out!
