Is your LO drinking out of a sippy cup? As in he/she got the gist of it and can hold, tilt, drink. DS hasn't. He doesn't know to tilt it, won't hold both handles and mainly bangs it against the tray. Rec your sippy cup too, please?
Lydia is drinking out of a sippy cup. It took her a while to get the gist of what it's for. I just filled it with water and let her play with it. I used to put the nozzle in her mouth every once in a while, and she would suck. That's how she got used to it. She does chuck it around quite a bit, but I'm sure it's because she likes the noise. We use the Nuby brand sippy cups. The ones with the handles right now, and the sport sippers for when she gets older. I swear by Nuby sippy cups. I used them with both girls. They seem to like the soft silicone spout. It's easy to suck liquid out of, and not a complete change from a bottle nipple.
My LO has a hard time drinking from bottles or sippies. She does a little better with a sippy than a bottle though so I try to get her to drink a few drinks out of it a day. I tried the kind with a straw yesterday and she got the hang of it really quick, but like PP said, she tries to tip it so she doesn't get the whole effect. She is holding them on her own and puts them to her mouth but mostly just chews on them and doesn't tip them far enough. I use the ones with the removable handles so it is easier for her to use and the soft spouts so it doesn't hurt her gums.
I have noticed that if I give her a straw one now, she'll tip it too much where the liquid isn't getting in the straw to suck. So since I know she does good with that one already I'll stick with the reg. sippys to keep practicing the tipping until she is really good at it.
DD is hit or miss with the training sippies. I never figured she'd go for a straw cup but maybe it's worth a shot because she doesn't seem to get that she needs to tilt it up.

It took DS nearly 3 weeks of looking at it to understand what it was. We started with Tommee Tippee sippys because we used Tommee Tippee bottles. Turns out, he wanted what LOOKED like his bottle, and that turned out to be a Nuby. THEN he finally got it.
Mine got the hang of it for the most part straight away. We just have to tip it up a little bit more for her. She does the straw ones pretty well, too, but she does still tip those up a little. With both kinds she gets a big mouthful of water and lets it dribble all over her. One problem we ran into was the sippies with the spout they have to bite on to let the water out. She got it just fine....then started biting ME while nursing...not cool....so we quickly ditched those.

Re: Sippy Cups
We have tried a couple different styles.
Playtex Straw style: she liked, but kept tilting the cup upwards like a bottle, so she wasn't getting any water. No good.
Playtext Regular sippy with hard spout: she just chews on
Now we're with a regular sippy with a soft silicone spout and having much more success.
We use this Tommee Tippee one: Li'l sippee first cup

DD started doing way better with a straw cup which was surprising. She has been doing a lot better with https://www.amazon.com/NUK-Learner-Latex-Single-Colors/dp/B002UXQRKW & the Avent trainer.

I wrote about it here, if you want some more insight. https://redheadbabymama.blogspot.com/2012/01/sippy-cup-he-did-it.html
Just keep going at it - he'll get it eventually.
