I know I have time before I really have to worry about it... But I honestly never heard about UPK until I moved up here. Can someone tell me about it? I just looked up about local UPK and it seems the daycare we already go to has UPK program there. So is that the same thing then? Do they just integrate the UPK program into the daycare? Just curious in advance!
Re: S/O UPK
UPK is funded through each district, but not nessesarily by the district. There was a district near me that was the first ever to drop UPK a year or so ago.
Here is more on what UPK is:

for us, UPK is held in some of our elementary schools...it stands for Universal Pre Kindergarten, which I believe means that it's free.
In our district: busing is provided no charge and there is an am and pm class. There is a class cap of 20 per section so they fill up fast and there is a waiting list. There is a lottery to get in. You have to live in the district in order to attend. It's just like school - they have NYS certified teachers in the rooms and 2 TA's. Their academics focus on writing their names, listening and talking about stories, learning numbers, the alphabet, "writing" stories, etc. And of course snack, calendar and a lot of social skills work. They do centers, whole group, small group, etc.
