For Those Having BFing Trouble

I've seen a few posts about mommies who are having issues with babies latching and/or getting tired in the middle of feeding, thus they are not getting a full feeding, and/or mom's milk supply is suffering. As a result, many of you are getting nipple shields, supplementing, pumping, discontinuing BFing, etc.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents as my DD (she is a member of this group but her baby is in NICU at present, so she does not have time to post much) is having the same problem with her baby.

She was told by the Lactation Consultant in the NICU that baby has a "posterior tongue tie" - this is not the classic tongue tie that most babies have.  LC's have a pretty good knowledge of it and know exactly what to look for; unfortunately, doctors not so much and it is difficult to find one who will clip it (more cutting required - sometimes suturing).  It has been proven that once this is corrected, babies begin nusring like champs!

I have attached a link if you are interested in reading.  If anything, it would not hurt to ask a LC to check this on the baby - it certainly cannot hurt. Of course, always consult with a professional, but hopefully you can read the symptoms and see if your baby may have this.

My DD's baby has not had hers clipped yet - she's in NICU and they have to do other studies/tests beforehand (they think it may be causing her to have obstructive apnea and right now my DD is pumping and feeding because the baby gets so tired from nursing due to improper latch, that she was not getting enough from feeding from the breast).  But if they will not do it - she will find a doctor who will.

Re: For Those Having BFing Trouble

  • The doctor told me that my son was tongue tied in the hospital and they clipped it.  They said it would help with latching on but I didnt notice any difference.  Still super painful for me.   For now I am pumping.

  • Cathy - did they clip it at the front frenulum?  If so, that is a different type of tongue tie.  You cannot see a posterior tongue tie, you have to feel for it...an experienced LC could easily find it....

     I'm sorry you're still having trouble.  :(

  • DD latched right away. Bu she had a crappy latch. To the point of cracked bleeding nips. It was bad. Though she is not tonuge tied, I asked for a nipple sheild while in the hospital. Since then I have had. A much better experience, we use it at every feeding. I'm okay with it, eventually we'd like to be off of it, but DD is gaining weight like a champ. I also pump, but that is mostly to build up supply and have some for DH/DS to feed her with. I use the Medela sheild, I also have a Tommy tipsie but don like it nearly as much as the other.

  • We had our LO checked by 3 LCs, our Pedi and the ENT that did the frenulectomy. Now he wont latch at all. Im just heratbroken as I dont wanna quit but dont want to battle my son for an hour every 2-3 hours. Pumping cant keep up with him even tho at our weighed feedings before the cut, he was getting 2ozs in 15 mins from just one side.

     gl to you ladies...
