CVS procedure

Hi,

Went today to our first sonogram (7/8weeks) as well as a meeting with a genetics counselor since I will be 35 when I have the baby.  She spoke to us about a procedure, CVS.  Has anyone done this?  If so, any recommendations?

Feedback greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Re: CVS procedure

  • We did not have it done because I was only 27 when I got pregnant with my son. We also did not have any medical history on either side that would have prompted us to have it done.

That kind of test to check for any kind of genetic disorder is usually done on women over 35 or couples who have downs syndrome or any other kind of genetic disorder on either side.

There's always risks with tests like that so unless you NEED to have it done, I would skip it. The CVS info was in the big packet of stuff they give you at the OB's office but my OB did not even bring it up.

What we did have done was the NT Scan which is just an ultrasound & bloodwork that checks for pretty much the same thing based on the size of this little sac on the back of the baby's neck. It's much less invasive and if heaven forbid they do get abnormal results, then at that point you can move on to something like the CVS.
