Food Allergy

Question (So annoyed with Drs)

Hi! I don't really post here often but I feel like I have no one else to ask. I enjoy reading other posts and find everyone so helpful!!! Allergies are new to us. We have our 3 year old with no allergies and our 1 year old with every allergy :)

We took DD to her pedi today for her 1 year appt. I was hoping to get some answers on whether or not to stop her formula (Nutramigen). She has wheat, soy, egg, gluten and dairy allergies. When we last saw her allergist 3 weeks ago, we were supposed to do a soy challenge but she failed the skin test and dr was not comfortable doing the soy challenge. He said to talk to pedi about going off formula. So we go to pedi today and she says that she has no clue! I was baffled!!! Then she asked me if the allergist thought she would grow out of her allergies. Again I was baffled. As a medical professional you really know absolutely nothing about allergies??? Maybe I am wrong but I just though the whole conversation with the pedi was bizarre with her lack of knowledge. I understand she has not specialized but havent you seen other patients with allergies??  My question is what has other people done in similar situations. Is your child still on formula? Or do you just make sure that they are getting enough fruits/veggies to make up for all the nutrients? Also who do you generally talk about what food your child should be eating. I feel like when we spoke with the allergist last time and I asked him questions about things such as coconut milk and other alternatives he had no answers for me.

Thank you so much in advance!!!

Re: Question (So annoyed with Drs)

  • My twins are about to turn 1, and DD has a milk allergy. I am worried that their 1 year appointment is going to go the same way.  I would like to stop formula for DD if we are going to stop for DS...but I don't know what to put her on...and I don't knwo if she should stop. I just have this feeling that the pedi isn''t going to have great answers for me, because I've brought it up a couple times previously and they (we see a few different pediatricians in one practice) are sort of just like, well, let's wait and see and talk about it till their 1st birthday. Also, the allergist didn't really give us much direction either. It is very frustrating!

We are planning to see how the 1 year appt goes, and then will take her to a pediatric allergist. Sorry I'm not much help, but I understand your annoyance!

  • DD1 is allergic to dairy, eggs, and soy. Her pedi gave me a few recommendations of dairy replacements like rice milk, almond milk yogurt, coconut milk yogurt. The allergist gave me a sheet that showed how much of certain nutrients she should be getting in a day. But as far as detailed info on her new diet, I got that information from a dietitian that the pedi referred me to. So I would ask the pedi for a referral to a dietitian. I was overwhelmed at first and really stressed out about what to feed DD. But if you focus on feeding LO whole foods, it's a lot easier than trying to find processed foods that are safe. One thing you want to do is make sure LO is getting enough fat. It's really important for their brain development. You can use a lot of olive oil, avocado, chicken thighs to provide fat in LO's diet. For packaged foods, the Enjoy Life brand makes all it's products free of the top 8 allergens. DD loves their cookies.

  • Thank you! We definitely stick to whole foods. I don't necessarily like all of the additives in the allergy free foods. Actually as an entire family we all pretty much just east raw food. Yes maybe a dietitian would definitely be helpful! That is my biggest concern it making sure she is getting enough nutrients for her development. Thanks again!!!
  • We had the same problem. Our pedi didn't really know anything about DDs allergies. She said almond milk was alright but after a trial that killed DDs tummy we realized the pedi was wrong. A dietician friend has been our life saver.
