0 progress at 39 weeks!! Stripping Membranes!?

I am at 39 weeks and have contractions every day... but my last 3 dr appts show no progress. My cervix is really hard to reach, its tucked towards my back. My Doctor was going to strip my membranes last week, but couldn't reach!!! I am so hoping that this thursday I will have either made some progress on my own or that my doctor will be able to reach my cervix to strip my membranes!! My question is whether or not this membrane stripping business is worth it!? Because I heard its painful... Is it worth it!!?? Or should I just let my baby girl come when she is good and ready!!?

  • It is uncomfortable and you will most likely will be cramping some.  I had it done twice and nothing has happened yet other than MP has come out.

  • Your not alone! At 40 weeks they couldn't strip mine either because I was a zero across the board my MW could reach :( I'd say go to 40 weeks and if they can strip them go for it! Good luck :)

  • I didn't think they could strip until you had made some progress. I had mine stripped today and it wasn't very uncomfortable - but that's probably b/c I'm already making progress. I can see how it would be painful/uncomfortable if you were at a zero all around.

  • I as well was under the impression that they couldnt strip your membranes unless you were progressed somewhat.  And I've also heard that the pain/discomfort level is an individual thing.

As for not progressing yet....join the club! I'm 39 and 2 and no progress as of saturday night. and I've been having false/pre/prodromal labor  (whatever!) contractions for over a week now.

     Good luck to you.

  • I just posted about this before reading this post. My friends all recommended me to ask my doctor to have mine stripped, but I seriously don't want to. I'm at 39 weeks and a couple of days, and my doctor will be checking for progress today. If I have no progress, I'm personally not comfortable with having my membranes swept! All I hear is how it hurts, and a lot of the time it doesn't really do anything, so why go through that for something that may or may not work, know what I mean?

That's just my opinion, but my train of though is if it's not necessary, then I'll leave well enough alone until it is.

  • FWIW I was 0 cm when my water broke...And barely 2 cm after 10 hours of labor AFTER my water broke! So just because you have no progress, it doesn't mean labor isn't right around the corner. I had my LO exactly 1 week early.

Good Luck and Happy Birthing, ladies!! xox
