What is the pay range for nannies nowadays?

DH and I are talking about getting a nanny once I have to go back to work after having this second baby. DS will be in school half days and I was just curious how much is a normal pay range for them? TIA

Re: What is the pay range for nannies nowadays?

  • I don't know what is "normal", but I live in a relatively low cost of living area and my friend pays her nanny approximately $25,000 per year and pays for a cell phone for her.  That is to pick her twins up from kindergarten in a vehicle she supplies, start dinner, do some laundry and do some other things around the house.  She gets 1 or 2 weeks of paid vacation/sick time throughout the year, as well.

  • We're in a low cost of living area and last year a friend made $9/hr and worked about 25 hours a week.  Most situations I have heard of here, the nanny only works part time with no benefits.  Usually college students (like my friend).

  • I'm a nanny, and I am a part of a nanny share right now. I work with three families. I am paid $12/hour for one child, $16/hour for two children and $24/hour for three children. I work from 8:15-5:15. I have taxes taken out of my weekly paycheck, and I am given a paid vacation day every 10 weeks that I can take at my discretion. I have holidays off and they are unpaid - the holidays were agreed upon when the contract was drawn up. I do not get paid sick days.

If a child is sick, I usually take them regardless, because that is a bonus of having a nanny.  If a family misses a day because of vacation, it is paid for me.

I prepare breakfast, lunch and snacks for the baby/toddlers that I watch, take them to classes that the parents choose and also go to the park/museums/play cafes/etc, pick up toys, do the dishes that I use and do light laundry (wash bedding, BundleMes and outside clothing weekly or as needed).

I live in a HCOL area. I am on the lower side for rates here.

  • I live in a medium COL area and a full time nanny would run about $2,500 a month give or take a few hundred depending on experience.
