Could excess tearing with a head cold be symptom of conjunctivitis?

As of yesterday morning, DD has a cold. Clear, runny nose, and watery eyes. No fever or any other symptoms other than more irritable than usual, which is to be expected. Yesterday, I'd say the eye tearing was the normal response to a head cold, but today, along with being more congested, her eyes are even more watery. My poor munchkin! They're just so teary!! She isn't itching her eyes, no crusty lids upon waking, etc., but they're slightly red (no more so than maybe typical cold eyes though) and so watery. I'm planning on taking her into the pedi tomorrow to be safe, but from your experiences, does conjunctivitis ever start with very watery eyes with a cold? I'm assuming it's from congestion, but I'm worried.

  • I honestly don't know about just teary, but my DD had a cold and slightly gross discharge from her eyes (more like mucous) and it was connected to an ear infection.  They can get eye discharge with ear infections and maybe congestion.  It wasn't pink eye though.
