Hearing Screening vs Test

DD had hearing screening and didn't pass. I was a bit suprised because she seems to hear really quiet sounds, but I have noticed her asking, "what?" often. So, I don't know if it is different tones... Anyway, she has been refered for a hearing exam and I don't really know what to expect to prepare myself and her. They did say I can go in the booth with her.

Re: Hearing Screening vs Test

  • grayson has had a few hearing tests.

you go into this "quiet" booth... there is a window and you can see the person outside of it.  She'll give directions... there will be a noise to one side- and if the child looks, they get credit.  this was for him at 18mo so not sure if your DD will have something different b/c she is oder.

they also place something in their ears that expands a little and tests pressure or something... it's really quick.

Gray's hearing was not horrible but not good.  The doc said it probably went back and forth from good to bad - which is even worse for speech development b/c it's always different.  He's in speech now (for a year) and doing great.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • My DD is quite advanced with her vocabulary and sentence structure yet she has failed her hearing screenings at pre-school. I always follow up with her pediatrician and it turns out she has had fluid in her ear or an ear infection each time as well.
  • When DD has had actually hearing tests, it started off with placing something in each ear.  I think it measured the pressure or something?  It was super quick and painless.

During the actual hearing test, I was able to go into the sound booth with DD.  They put headphones on DD and leave the room.  There is a window in the room so you can see the tester.  It started off where the tester would say words and DD had to say them back to me.  They did different volumes and then went to just one ear at a time.  Words were easy that she new and could easily say (sun, rainbow, puppy.)  When DD had a hard time hearing the tester (you won't be able to hear the tester) DD would ask me what she said or would mumble the word.

Then they gave me a bag of rubber monkeys.  I would had them to DD one at a time.  When she would hear a beep, she had to toss the monkey into a bucket.

When DD didn't pass the hearing test we went to her pedi and then eventually to an ENT.  It was always fluid behind the ear.  She would get her hearing retested after the fluid was gone and she was able to pass.

  • When my kids have had hearing tests at both the ENT's and through the school testing, the kids put on headsets and had to move a toy when they heard a beep.  It was really pretty simple.
