Baby Names

Thoughts on the name Daphne?

DH is really pushing to name our baby girl "Daphne". He loves the name. I like it a lot too, but am having trouble fully committing to it (I have a few other names I really like but he's not into, and we have one other potential that I'm finding myself less and less enamored with).

The middle name would be Diane (family name, not changeable). Last name starts with a hard G and is two syllables.

I'm open to hearing it all -- good and bad. Potential nicknames/taunts, pronunciation/spelling issues, negative associations in popular culture, etc. Also, would it throw you off if you saw that name on a professional resume? What comes to mind when you hear the name Daphne?

Re: Thoughts on the name Daphne?

  • I love it.  The only negatives I can think of are possibly being called "daffy" and the Scooby Doo reference.

  • LOVE it! This is the name I would use if my husband had no input in baby naming. I keep it on our short list and bring it up, periodically, with the hope that he will warm up to it.

I don't love Daphne Diane (alliterative first and middle names aren't my thing), but I don't think it sounds bad.

    Good luck!

  • I have a negative conitation with this name, and I am really not sure why. For me - it sounds like a poodles name.

I am not a fan of many female names that have the ee/y sound at the end, to me it is very girlish.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • I have a friend named Daphne, so I think of her first. And then my favorite Scooby Doo character. Basically I have no ill associations with it and think it's a great name!

My first and middle are Danielle Diane. I kind of had that reaction at first too to Daphne Diane... but then again I can't say I've ever really hated or experienced any frustration with my first and middle both starting with D, so I've let that slide off my list of "concerns".

    Thanks for the input! :)

I love Daphne! Are you having a little girl for sure, dani? I must have missed this news! (: Congrats!

Haha... yeah, I haven't made the announcement yet though! I might wait until next week, after our reveal party to our friends/family. Although, if a few people happen to catch it in here, it's no biggie. Smile

DH and I were just having a long discussion about names yesterday, and I'm trying to either get fully on board with Daphne, or decide that I just can't do it. I feel bad leaving it on the fence, and possibly getting him even more stuck on it if I ultimately decide to veto it.

  • I think is nice but I immediately think of Scooby Doo; but it isn't necessarily a bad thing

I actually like the alliteration in Daphne Diane

CONGRATS and welcome to Team Pink! I like the name Daphne, trying to get my husband on board with it too but he vetoed it.

  • I think its very pretty...  MN isn't ideal but I would much rather you have a meaningful family name like Diane than something else just for "flow"

I can't really forsee any potential bad nn's that would be any more obvious than most names..

  • I love Daphne.  It literally makes me smile just hearing it.

  • Love it!! Pretty and underused. H vetoed it because he can't get past scooby doo...

    I hope you use it!

  • Daphne is NMS, but it's a perfectly fine name. It's definitely fresh and underused, and I like that about it.

Can I give a suggestion? I was sort of "meh" on Monica when DH mentioned it; I liked it, but I liked so many other names more (that he vetoed). I decided I'd just give it a chance, so I spent a couple days referring to DD as Monica in my head. Since then, she's never been anything else to me.

Great suggestion. I've actually been kind of doing that today -- referring to the baby either in my head or out loud as "Daphne" to see how it "feels", and "asking" her/my belly what she thinks (as if I'll get a response!). It's already grown on me a little bit, so we'll see how it feels after a few days! Smile

  • I love Daphne! It was on our long list for this little one, and will probably make the short list if we get to have another girl.

Daphne Diane is just fine. Great name!

  • I like it but not with the mn Diane.
  • Sorry but I don't like it. Too many consonants jammed together in the middle I guess. It also makes me think of Phoebe, which is another name I don't care for.

As far as Daphne Diane, do you like the nn Deedee? I thought of it immediately.

  • I like it.  Scooby Doo does come to mind, but I don't think it's a big deal.

My parents used to call me "dee dee" when I was a little girl (for Danielle Diane). Can't say it bothered me. I don't think I'd call my daughter "dee dee" though, but not because I think it's horribly awful.

  • Our dd is Daphne.  I loved it ever since I was pregnant with my first child, who turned out to be a boy.  My husband wasnt on board at first but when he saw her he wanted that to be her name.  We always get compliments on it.  Weve gotten the Scooby Doo reference but mostly when we were sharing what we might name her before she was born.  We also got the "what would you call her?" question, but we dont have a nn for her and just call her Daphne.
