Preemies

What are my chances of IUGR happening agian?

I had twins girls at 34.4 that had developed IUGR around 30 weeks. They were born weighing 2, 12 and 3,10/ so my question is when we decide to have another what are the chances a preemie again or being high risk in general? Just curious?

Thanks!

Re: What are my chances of IUGR happening agian?

  • Sorry I kind of look at these boards because I'm having my twins at 37w (no later) due to cholestasis, BP rising, IUGR. My two have IUGR and I'm almost 34w so we are taking it every few days (NST's twice a week, growth scans every two weeks). At 32 w my girl was about 2lb 14oz (1st percentile) and boy was 3lb 9oz about (7th) so regardless they will be pretty small. Just a question on how your kids did in the NICU, were they just feeders/growers, about how long was their stay?? Doctor thinks that my kids will be around 3-4lbs when born. Sorry for jacking your post I hang out on the multiples board, april 12, and PAIF. You can always PM me if you have time... A lot of twin moms I know on the boards are all having "big" babies so it's hard for me to relate...

  • I think the chance of IUGR recurring is pretty high.  However, it might be different in your case because you had multiples.  For me, I had severe IUGR with my LO. As I understand it, there isn't a great deal of research or definitive information.  However, I think in general that if you have pre-e or IUGR in a first pregnancy, there's about a 1:3 chance it will happen again.

I'm very curious to hear what others post on this.  It's definitely a concern of mine and may ultimately keep us from trying for another LO.

As for the second post, my LO was born @ 35 weeks weighing 3lbs 12ozs. They first found the IUGR around 28 weeks, and I made it much further than my Doctors thought I would.

Every case is so different, so I hesitate to tell you, but . . . .  in general, IUGR babies have longer NICU stays (as feeder/growers) compared to babies the same size who were earlier.  This is per our NICU team.

IUGR preemies tend to have low muscle tone and don't have much stamina because they have diverted resources to their brain and organ development.  So, it's often take a little time for them to learn to regulate temp and their suck/swallow/breathe.  My primary said that babies who regulate their temp first usually take longer to master the eating (vs the other way around).

My LO spent 31 days.  He was in the isolette for about a week and under Bili lights for the first 3 or 4 days. Then we just had to wait (and wait) for him to decide he was ready to take all his bottles.  He went from drinking 1/3 or half of two bottles a day to finishing all 8 feeds in a matter of about a week.  So once they "get it" it goes really fast!

GL with the rest of your pregnancy!  I hope you can make it to 37 weeks and bring those little peanuts home right away:)

  • I would just guess that unless you have twins again, you aren't at much increased risk depending on what the cause of the IUGR was.  As you know, it's more common in multiple pregnancies (especially mo/di) because of the competition for space and nutrients.

Hey snoangel79- so sorry I am just responding, I get so busy it's hard to find time. I am teacher and work blocks me from PMing so I will have to write you on here but if you ever have questions or concerns email at MeL2185@aol.com- It's Melissa and I would be more than happy to respond. I had a perfect twin pregnancy up until 30 weeks and they thought the babies weren't as big as they should be so they said we will monitor is closely and check at 32 weeks and makes sure they are growing like they should- well of course they weren't and so right then I got 2 days work of steriod shots (have you had those yet?) I would strongly encourage you to ask about them if you haven't had. They helped our girls a great amount. So we waited and they put me on modified bed rest and we checked again at 34 weeks and they hadn't grown at all so my OB sent me to a high risk who did a 2 hour sonogram- I thought I might die from being uncomfortable and the doc said if I was his patient he would deliver me that day b/c of the risks of stillborn and Baby B's cord flow wasn't looking good. So my OB decided to wait until the next day so everything went fine and they were born at 2lb 12 oz and 3 lbs 10 oz and whisked right off to the NICU. Ava was our 3 pounder and she actually had to be on a vent for 24 hours and the billi lights and an IV for meds. Olivia was fine and didn't need any of that. Ava was off all of that by day 3 and then they just had feeding tubes to grow. We were honestly just feeders and growers. I didn't breastfeed b/c I have had reduction surgery and I wasn't allowed to. Ava was there for 17 days and Olivia was there for 30 days. It was so incredibly hard and harder when Ava came home but I look back adn can't believe where we are now. Walking, talking happy 17 month old girls. Now I wish I could tell you our weight problems all went away and I know for many moms with Lo's with IUGR it does but ours followed and are still with us. We had a hard time growing. They were on Neosure for 11 months and now whole milk and we have NEVER been on the growth chart- they are still less than 5 % in weight but in 50% for height. They are tall and skinny. I stressed for the first few months and had many meltdowns b/c we weren't growing well but our doc was never worried and to this day still isn't b/c they eat everything adn eat great they just have a hard time gaining alot of weight.

Hope this helps and email me anytime! Good luck to you

Thank you so much for your reply!! and PP also!! Unfortunately I didn't get my steroid shots, I am 34w today  and they don't give them past that. I have begged my doctor especially since I heard "white boys" have the hardest time with breathing. I'm at Brigham in Boston and they have a level 3 NICU. So I know I'm in a good place for them. My sister was a 28w there, 22 years ago and she did very well. 3 more weeks at the most! I know I will probably be doing an intro on this board though because of their IUGR. Next growth check Friday, NST yesterday was perfect for both of them. No cord flow issues as of last time but I know that can change and they are on top of that! I will definitely contact you if I have any questions! Thank you so much for your reply!! Your girls are beautiful <:

  • It depends on my you had IUGR in the 1st place.  For me, they have no idea.  If you have a clotting disorder you can do thinner shots and reduce your risk.  If you have other risk factors, controlling those can help.

  • I went for a second opinion consult with a top MFM doc in our area, and he said for women who get it with unknown cause, it's very low--and likely less than 15%. Unfortunately, they know so little about it so it's hard to know what to think.

  • I was interested in these responses as I'm very hesitant to have another child.

We discovered that DS2 was IUGR at my 20 week scan.  From then on he just wasn't growing.  He was 15oz at birth and we spent 101 days in the NICU.  I had high blood pressure during pregnancy very early on but other than that the tests on the placenta all came back normal.
