Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sacral Dimple

Hi,

My baby has been diagnosed with a sacral dimple. They didn't even tell us in the hospital, the pediatrician told us at our first visit.  Its a little on the deep side, but doesn't have any marks or hairs and is low on the back. I had never heard of this and have succeeded in scaring myself by researching it on the Internet. My Dr. thinks everything looks fine, and everything else looks normal,  but we are going for a ultrasound in 2 weeks just to rule out any problems. Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA !

Re: Sacral Dimple

  • Don't worry if your doctor isn't.  Is it low on the back?  My son has one and had an ultrasound at one week old.  Everything was just fine.

  • My DD had this.  No one at the hopsitl told us either.  Our Pedi told us and ordered the u/s.  She was a couple months old when the u/s was done.  Everything came back fine.  The pedi just wanted it check to be safe.  As long as your DC is moving all extremities fine then I wouldn't worry.   DD is almost 2 now. She has never had any other problems with the sacral dimple.
  • My baby has one too and so does my husband.  It's harmless but you need to make sure to keep it clean.  They can sometimes get a cyst (pilonidal) there.  If he ever complains when he's older, make sure to get the cyst taken care of quickly.  My husband let one go and had to have surgery to have it removed and it was a looooong recovery.

  • Thank you for posting this! Our baby has a deep sacral dimple as well. We found out the day after she was born when the Pediatrician came to check her out. She was sent for an ultrasound that day and they confirmed that it is closed and now attached to the spine or any nerves.

Even though they told me all this it still bothers me every time I look at it! When we bath her at night I have so much trouble keeping it clean. I am going to talk more to my Pedi about it tomorrow morning but just know you are not alone!

  • My friend's 5 mo old has one.  So far he's doing fine and it's probably nothing to worry about.

  • so i just looked this up.  my DS has one and so do i and my dad has spina bifida.  i will certainly be bringing this up to the pedi!
  • i seriously hate the words sacral dimple. The pedi at the hospital pointed it out to us after DD was born and said to make an appt. with our own pedi for her opinion. We did so and.. she said it was kind of ambigious.. a "tricky" one she said.. She couldnt tell for sure if it was closed or not. i was sick to my stomach for 2 weeks (as if having a newborn isnt hard enough?) until the u/s appt.

The u/s was horrid itself- dd cried for 10 minutes (being laid on her stomach and forcefully held there) until she finally gave up and just laid there, limp. it was god awful.  so the pediatric radiologist said everything looked fine... its just a dimple.

i cant even describe the relief i felt at that moment. we were so happy that we went out to eat with dd to "celebrate". When we got home we had a message from the pediatric radiologist and he said that he wanted to talk to me... he looked at the scans again and he thinks he would like to have an mri done, just in case.

Aaannnd off to the bathroom I ran.

I spoke to him and he said it was just precautionary.. he would feel better if we had an MRI done. I did not feel comfortable having my 3 week old SEDATED by IV for an MRI. I talked to our pedi and she looked at the scans and said SHE THOUGHT everything looked ok but just in case, to get a second opinion. So we went to Childrens Hospital and had a consultation with the Head of Children's NeuroSurgery. He looked at the scans, looked at her, and said she seemed totally fine. (Insert second sigh of relief here).  We go back for a 3 month follow-up next week and I'm not even concerned this time, I know she's perfect.

And there's my sacral dimple story.  Tongue Tied

  • *edit (sorry it posted twice so i'm just deleting the extra post!)
