Gift ideas for 7 yr old boy

DD (and I) have been invited to a birthday party for one of my coworker's son. And I need gift ideas. I asked his mom and she wasn't very helpful as far as suggestions. All she said was;

a) he likes video games (but apparently he has a ton and doesn't need any more)

b) he likes books (but I guess he gets free books from school)

What do 7 year old boys like? Preferably something not too expensive ($20 or less..we're on a budget)

If he likes books, he might like Illustory. The child creates his own story and receives a color copy of the book. It's around $20 and I think I saw them in Target too.

My nephews are both into science kits (think hatching earthworms, ant farms, making your own bouncy balls, etc).

Books - but that's a hard one since you don't know what he already has

Superhero anything

Art stuff - something different like a Crayola paint spinner or light board

My 7 yr old nephew wanted squinkies for his birthday,or pokemon toys,he also likes super mario anything.

Does he like any sports teams? My son is a sports nut and loves getting t-shirts or baseball caps. He is not into Star Wars or superheros at all (but that does not seem to be the norm with that age group).

Stomp rockets are always fun.  Lego is good. The nerf water guns are always a huge hit too.

BeyBlades, Legos or Starwars stuff were all things my 7 year old purchased recently. Target has a really nice section of small Starwars action figures right now
