Stood up for myself

We just moved to Idaho to be near friends who are like family.  We are very close, including with our friends' extended family.  Over the weekend, we had dinner at my BFF's house and her FIL was there.  This wasn't the first time we had seen them since moving here and they all know what happened last year.  I view my BFF's house as my safe place.

So, I was filling my plate for dinner and BFF's FIL comes up to me and says, "oh, are you eating for two again?"  Dead silence in the room as I stare at him and then look at my full plate.  I look back at him and say, "oh, I can't have anymore children."  He says, "I know, I was making a joke." OMG!  I got out of the kitchen as fast as I could.

So I go into the dining room with my plate and DH asks what happened. I tell him and say, so I'm a little upset right now.  I just eat my food in silence and then BFF's FIL comes in with his plate and leans over to me and says, "I was being sarcastic. I'm sorry if I upset you."  I looked him right in the eye and said, "it's not funny, it's not something to joke about.  I mean it."  

DH told his BFF what his dad said to me and he said "what a jacka$$.

Who thinks it's ok to make a joke like that?  Ugh-and at my safe place too!  I was sad all weekend.

How awful. Good for you for saying something. That is not acceptable! I had a co-worker tell me a dead baby "joke" my first day back from maternity leave with Aidan. He said it in front of a bunch of people and they all called him out while rushing to hug me. That was almost 2 years ago and the most I've said to him was work issues.

Thanks for the support ladies! It would have been so easy to say, 'It's ok" when he apologized, but it will never be ok.  So glad I told him so!

Who the f*ck says something like that?  I am SO sorry you had to hear something insensitive, but good for you for sticking up for yourself.  It may not have saved you from hearing it, but maybe he'll think twice about his "jokes" from now on.

What a wretched, horrific thing to say.  I am SO proud of you for standing up to him.  He also deserved a kick in the crotch, we can deal with that later.
