One syllable first & last names

This has been driving me nuts lately.  We're team green and having the hardest time coming up with boys' names.  Our last name is one syllable and starts with an S.  I really like the name Luke (not Lucas only because of the double S sound).  I'm not sure how I feel about Luke S___.   Too short?  Too choppy?  DH, FIL and BILs are all one syllable first names with the one syllable last name but I've been hearing their names for years so they just sound normal now.

I know there are different opinions on the Luke but I'm curious on your thoughts about one syllable first names with one syllable last names.

Re: One syllable first & last names

  • Yeah, I would go with a longer first name unless you are really in love with Luke.

  • We have a one syllable last name and I ruled out one syllable first names b/c I didn't like they way they sounded with our last name but I think it depends on the names. But in general, I like a longer first name with the short last name.

Both my daughters have 3 syllable first names.

  • I think it's ok if it's a name you love! I think it sounds better with boys names than girls names. My favorite boy name is one syllable and we have a one syllable ln and I'll still use it.

  • I think it depends on the names, but not all 1-1 combinations sound bad.  Think Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Chris Rock, Glenn Close, Mae West, and so on....

  • In general, I would say no, but sometimes it can work. I know a guy named Scott Grant, and I never thought anything about it, but if I had been a boy, my mom wanted me to be Christopher, which would have been shortened to Chris, and I'd have been Chris Kime. Um.... ew.

So, If your last name is something like Smith or Stone, I think it is fine, but if it ends in another hard K sound, like Stork, I'd say don't do it.

Nope, no K sound.  That would be a definite no.

  • I would go for it if you really like the name. I have a Luke Smith.

  • I also have a one-syllable last name, and all the names on our list have at least 3 syllables, but longer names do tend to get shortened, so he may still get called by a 1-syllable first and last name.  For example, my husband is called Chris, his dad and brother are both called Mike, and his uncle is called Dave.  I think this can be okay for guys, but if you think it sounds too choppy, you can try to stick to 2-syllable nicknames. (Although these are often very young, ex. Joey, Danny, Timmy, etc.)

  • I'm pretty much in agreement with pps - it depends on the name. Some 1-1 combos sound great, others sound silly. Use your judgment on how it sounds. It's probably ok, like pps said, if the last name doesn't end in the k sound (which you said it does not).

    I'd go for it :)

  • I think it is too short and choppy.  I would pick a longer first name.
  • It's impossible to say without knowing your last name. I really love Luke! I wish people didn't jump to the conclusion that it's short for Lucas, though, when it stands perfectly well on its own (like the Book of Luke, for example).
  • I think it almost always sounds fine.
  • My maiden name is one-syllable.  My mom and dad both have/had one syllable names and I used a one syllable diminutive of my longer name.  Never thought twice about it or thought it was weird.
