Results of GBS test - have to speak to a Dr?

I had to switch OB practices a few months ago and their policy seems a little different from what I'm used to. I called today for the results of my GBS test and the nurses weren't allowed to give it to me, the doctor has to call me back.

The same thing happened with my GTT. The dr called back to let me know I passed. I would understand if they wanted to be the ones to tell you if the results were positive, but they weren't.

It just kind of seems like a waste of the dr's time... Is this normal elsewhere?

Re: Results of GBS test - have to speak to a Dr?

  • I get my results in an online chart sytem they use... I would imagine that the only time my Dr would want to talk to me is if there is a problem.. but some Dr's offices are like that, so I wouldn't worry, specially since you have a new Dr.

Some places are just more hands on I guess and want to make sure you get any answers to questions you may have.

  • At my office they only call you for test results if there is an issue. If everything comes back as expected, they just let you know at your next appointment.

  • My practice seems to be of Ye Olde Philosophy "No News is Good News" and only calls when something is wrong.  I didn't hear about my GBS test until I went in the following week for my appointment.
  • At my OB's office, it is always the nurse calling with results.  Although they didn't call for my GTT (they only call if you fail). But every other call I've gotten with results has been from a nurse.

    This.

I called last week to make an extra appointment before we went out of town to be check and asked the nurse the results of my GBS test and she told me.

  • My doc does the 'no news is good news' thing for the GD test, but not for GBS. They didn't call me with results for either, but I am GBS+ and they let me know at my appointment last week.

  • when I had my GBS I was told I would find out the results at my next appt. Granted that appt was 5 days later due to the timing/availability of the doctor.

However I have found that unless I call, the Dr.s office does not call with results unless there is an issue. Depending on what the test was for, the nurses are sometimes allowed to give results. However the Dr. will call/email to followup to see if there are any questions. So I guess either way the Dr. gets involved.
