2nd Trimester

Cramping with low lying placenta

I was told a week and a half ago that I have a low lying placenta.  They said that most likely it will move up on it's own and when I called my dr to make sure I shouldn't be concerned, the dr said only if I started bleeding.  So, I haven't thought much about it, but am having some cramping.  I know I can call my dr if it continues, and I will, but I wanted to see if any of you have had experience with this or any information.  I can't find much on the internet and my previous pregnancies didn't have these issues.  Thanks so much!

Re: Cramping with low lying placenta

  • i had some cramping last week which was quite painful along with lot of braxton hicks contraction ..i have a normal posterior placenta.. it turned out to be due to urinary infection and after the antibiotic course evrything is resolved ..i got an u/s though and it was perfect with cervix long and closed...

  • I was just told on Friday that I have a low-lying placenta. I kind of freaked out...cuz that's just what I tend to do, but then found a bunch of stuff online about how common it is, etc etc. Anyway, then on Saturday I tried to help move a futon and obviously didn't account for how heavy it was.  The rest of the day, I had a pain in my side (similar to RLP) and had myself all freaked out that I made the condition even worse.  Today, I'm fine though, so who knows.

So..basically, I don't have an answer to your question, but you're not alone. I'm interested to see if anyone else knows anything else about the cramping so that when that comes along I'm prepared for it.

  •  I have a placenta previa and my high risk OB put me on pelvic rest with limited activity during the day.  The only symptom that I was told to watch for is bleeding.  He said that if I was having bleeding from the previa that it would start without warning, would be heavy, and that I would need to head to the ER immediately.   I'm hoping the placenta decides to move soon because I don't like feeling like a ticking time bomb!  I would think that your risk of bleeding would be significantly lower with a low-lying placenta because it's not actually covering your cervix and I would guess that the cramping is unrelated.

  • I would call your doctor so you can hopefully get some peace of mind.  I was told I had a low lying placenta at my 17 week ultrasound.  I was extremely stressed out about it and the information online isn't always that helpful to read!  I saw my doctor a few days after the ultrasound and she said it was very common (I think 20% of pregnancies) and did not seem worried about it at all which made me feel a lot better.  I'm now at 21 weeks and I had very minor cramping once or twice but I think it could have been unrelated.  When I first found out I kept waiting for something bad to happen like bleeding, but 4 weeks later nothing has happened so I feel a lot better.  I don't get another ultrasound until 30 weeks to check the placenta's position which is kind of frustrating because it would be nice to know before then if it has moved.
