Prenatals causing nausea

I've been taking my prenatal since the day I found out I was pregnant, and remembering my last pregnancy when they would make me sick to my stomach I went to Target and bought the Rainbow Light that is supposed to be gentle on the stomach with ginger. I also take an algae based DHA supplement. The other night I had a super bad migraine and wasn't feeling well, couldn't keep a damn thing down and ended up losing my vitamins in the process. Yesterday I felt better than I have this entire pregnancy! I could eat and didn't feel sick, I had a little more energy (did ALL my dishes!), and felt really good! I took my pills last night, and voila today I'm back to being nauseated and can't eat!

So my question is, (before I talk to my doctor, just looking for some opinions) would you continue taking your vitamins and just suck it up, or maybe not take them? I have two toddlers to care for, and a household too, and if my vitamins are making me sick now what's to say I won't still be getting sick from them even during 2nd tri? Thanks for reading my novel! I always write too much...

Re: Prenatals causing nausea

  • I told my Dr that I was getting sick too and she told me to take two, Flinstone Completes a day and that would do the same trick! I love them and if she says it's good, I'm good with it and it makes me feel better knowing that I'm getting SOMETHING instead of nothing. By the way, LOVE the pictures of your twins! They're too cute!

  • Call your doc and see if you can drop by to pick up some samples of other prenatals.  See if another brand works better.  I have a duel pill, one is a prenatal and one is a fish oil pill - I'm good as long as I take them with food.

  • try a prenatal with less iron

make sure you mention to your OB if you are taking one with less iron so she can test your iron levels.

  • My doctor said the most important thing is that you get 400 mg of folic acid, so I can take regular vitamins or the Flintstones on rougher days.  She also said if I get sick and need to miss a day it is not the end of the world.

  • I switched from Rainbow Light to Bellybar chewable prenatals and that helped. I always take them with food though. Good luck finding something that works! I also have a liquid prenatal that I mix in juice.

  • I'm right there with you!  I haven't been able to take prenatals in two weeks because I just throw them up.  My doctor said it's okay to go without them if they are making me sick.  I was nursing prior to getting pregnant and taking vitamins, but still I feel so unsettled about not taking prenatals right now.  :(  I just hit 12 weeks today and I'm praying that I get better soon.  I hope you feel better soon too.

  • There are some gummy prenatals that I found at walmart and they are awesome. They taste like gummy bears and sour patch kids. I have never gotten sick from them. Powerade also has B6 in it, and I've found that it helps with the nausea. Whatever works right?
