I wasn't even sure how to pronounce it at first (eye-la). But H loves it now and has decided that if we ever have a girl, this is the name to beat. And when it comes to girl names, I really have nothing.
I think it's pretty and feminine, which I like. It's unusual but not made up, which I like.
But she can forget having a personalized license plate for her tricycle .
What's the general response to this name? And if you hate it, what would you suggest for "pretty, feminine, and unusual but not made up"
Re: Thoughts on the name Isla?
My goofy little blog
I love, love, love it! The first time I'd ever heard of it was when I was in junior high (circa mid-90s). I had a friend whose middle name was spelled Islay...but pronounced Eye-la. I've loved it ever since then! The next time I had heard of it was 10 years later when Isla Fisher was in Wedding Crashers. STILL loved it then! Still love it NOW! It's on my short-ish list. An old high school friend just named her daughter Isla. First time I've seen it as a first name in my circles.
It's beautiful, feminine and different.

I agree with pps - it's pretty but I'm already kind of bored - hearing it A LOT on here - I think it's gaining in popularity.
I still say it incorrectly in my head even though I know how to say it. I don't know why seeing as I don't stumble over island and other such words, but I always say Is-la in my head even though I know it is Eye-la. Just saying.
Ditto. And, I don't think it's as pretty as I once thought it was.
You know, I have never, ever bought anything with my name on it (even though they always had it at the store). I don't think that's as big of a deal as people think it is...
I like Isla. I think it has a lovely sound to it. Generally speaking, I kind of mentally cross off names that have risen in popularity due to a celebrity, just cause I think that can time-stamp a name pretty easily.... But Isla is pretty, and if you're struggling to find a girl name you both like, the celebrity thing is certainly not a good enough reason to rule it out.
We have an Isla - she's a bit older than the crop of babies though that currently seem to have the name ;o). I think we probably get stopped once a week with someone commenting "I have a .......... who just named their daughter Isla".
It does get mispronounced a bit, but not badly, and it is becoming more popular here in North America (mine was born in Scotland where it has been very popular for ages).
