what are you giving up for Lent?

I'm thinking facebook or maybe eating out. I can't really think of anything else.

So, lets hear it...what are you giving up??

My MIL - wait, that likely wont work.  I will probable give up fast food again. It can only help with my weight loss goals.

I'm giving up chocolate (I think?) and this year will focus on doing something rather than giving up to see if that helps me really think about Lent.

I should make a resolution to go back to church. I'm catholic but haven't been to church in months. Not even at Christmas. I know the mass has changed a little and I haven't been since they started making those changes.

The order of Mass hasn't changed, just some of the responses, prayers and Creeds are worded differently.  They will have cards in the pews with the new wording.

I'm not Catholic but DH and the kids are, and I still go to church with them and Bible study etc.  Still, I'm thinking of giving up either Diet Coke or chocolate.  I'm fairly certain that doing either will surely kill me, as I seriously get panicky thinking about not having any of either.  But it's about the sacrifice, right?

I told DH that I was giving up one or the other, and he said, "You're not Catholic, you don't have to give anything up".  I said something about not having to be Catholic to experience the sacrifice, spirit of the season, blah blah blah.  Then I joked that "since I'm not Catholic, I don't have to feel so guilty when I fail, which I surely will".  ;-)

I kinda want to do this too.  I went at Christmas and was really taken aback by all the wording changes in the mass.  Did. Not. Like.  What I don't get is that translations have to change over time as dialects and vernacular changes... so why do they feel like this translation makes the most sense?  I don't think it does... it's even harder to understand, IMO.  Even my formerly-Catholic DH didn't like it.

The previous translation was a little more "free" with the wording when it was done. This one was done in order to produce a translation that is more in keeping with the Latin (or Greek?) text, and with what the rest of the world is saying. My parish had several little mini-lessons about what was changing and why, and it was very interesting. A lot of the changes sound weird (at least at first) but are actually taken from scripture and therefore have a deeper meaning than you might realize at first. For example, the part where we now say "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof" (rather than "Lord, I am not worthy that I should receive you) is an actual "quote" from a scripture passage by a centurion. So when we say that, we're actually echoing words spoken to Christ. I think that's kind of cool

I'm getting used to it, change is hard, but I understand why it was done and I'm satisfied with that.
