Is it safe to wear an older child while pregnant? DD is 7 months, DH and I are ready to start TTC any time now. I wear DD a lot but I'm wondering how this will work especially once my belly gets bigger. She's small for her age, only 14lbs right now so it's not like she's heavy. I have a sling, mei tai, wrap, snugli(never use though) and I'm making a ring sling.
If you've done this, what carrier did you find the most comfortable?
Re: Baby wearing while pregnant
I wear DS (13 mo) on my back in a wrap regularly. I am short and don't have a very long torso, so I find that front carries are already out becauce of my belly. It is doable still, but I don't like the way DS presses against my uterus (in terms of comfort, I don't have safety concerns about it). That said, today I wore a 6-month old on my front just fine since she was much shorter than DS. It does take some fiddling to not have an irritating knot over my belly, but totally doable. Plus, tying tibetan would eliminate that problem; I just don't love doing that.
Your body will let you know of you do something you shouldn't. In general, I follow the 80% of pre-preg activity rule. So, I still wear DS, but I accept that some days I get tired sooner and should yield to that feeling as my 20% cut-back.
More Green For Less Green
I'm just about 30 weeks pregnant and still wear Micah (almost 16 months). In the past few weeks I've had to move him to my back, though, because it just wasn't comfortable with my belly anymore. I pretty much exclusively use my Ergo now, but the other day I had him in my girasol wrap because I needed to practice to show a friend. I had him on the front and he loved it (wouldn't let me take him out) and I was comfortable. Also, I was showing some friends all of my different carriers this weekend and had their babies (6 months and 2 months) on my front and it was not uncomfortable for me at all--I think because they're smaller than Micah.
Anyway, I would say it can definitely be done. Just follow your body's lead. If it's uncomfortable don't do it. You can try a different carrier or move her to your back when it gets uncomfortable in the front. I've heard of moms babywearing until the day go into labor. It can be done!

I am 27 weeks pregnant and still wear my 31lb 2 year old. If she needs snuggles around the house we use either the ring sling, or the Ergo. For longer trips we use a mei tai with a padded waist. I get tired faster so I don't wear her for long trips or whole days anymore.. My round ligament pain has been crazy lately, so on those days I try not to wear her. I wore her this morning with the mei tai tied above my bump, which really helped.
If she weighed less I would probably wear her more. She also gets to choose her mode of transportation (when appropriate) and is as likely to want to walk or ride in the stroller as being worn.
Nursed without dairy, egg, soy, peanut, treenut, fish, shellfish or beef for over a year.
Currently tandem nursing dairy, egg, and shellfish free.
DS born via emergency c/s after 20 hrs of labor. DD successful VBAC!
