fever every week?!

DS has been in preschool for two weeks, and he has been home with me 100% for the past 2.5yrs...since hes been in school, he has been sick every week (w/ fever) since starting preschool.  The first week, he got sick (w/ feve) two days in....it took almost a week to get rid of it, only to get sick again (w/ fever) in his second week.  When is it a normal range of sick time, vs. an issue with the school?  -taken from smartphone

Re: fever every week?!

  • This happened to DD her first autumn in preschool. She had hardly a sniffle her first 2 years, then when she started school, she got a fever/cold/ear infection every 2 weeks for 3 months.

Hers, however, only lasted a couple of days. Fevers that last a whole week or go really high should probably be seen by the dr. Check with your pedi to make sure they think everything's fine and see if you can get him to take more immune-boosting foods, like vitamin C.

  • Ds missed an entire month his first winter in preschool (in addition to a few other random times). He'd been home with a nanny prior to that. His first winter after he started daycare was full of ear infections. After we got tubes, it was much better and he's been out of school about two weeks total since the year started in August.

  • IMO, yes it is normal. This is DS's first year of preschool, but he has done mom and me classes and music classes since he was little so he built up an immune system through those. I know the first time we did mom and me class he was sick after almost each class. It drove me batty but he quickly developed a better immune system. Hang in there it does get better.

  • My DD started at a daycare/preschool when she was 2. It was the worst winter ever. It has gotten much better now.
