What would you do?

So, Ive had a non stop headache for 2 wks straight. Its not my bp, water intake or iron. My primary dr suggested an MRI. I have been on Nifedepine for 8 wks (just weaning off now)-but had ZERO side effects in the beginning, and normal w drug side effects they happen in the beginning

Im starting to worry its something serious now... Of course my dr will ask my GYN if I can do a head MRI. Im curious, would you do it or just wait? I just worry it could be something very serious going on w my brain. Its an odd headache that comes and goes in intensity throughout the day meaning it could be real intense for 10 min, then normal, then an hour later be intense for 45 min, then normal. Coughing, bending over, sneezing etc makes it worse and I did wake up in the middle of the night with my head pounding.

Re: What would you do?

  • I wouldn't, but if you are worried about the do it.

  • Yes, if your OB feels that it is okay, I would. I would be very worried that the intensity of labor would make the migraine dangerous for you and your LO. I suffered from migraines for years and most doctors will tell you its unsafe for your body to continually deal with pain like that over long periods of time.

  • If your PCP thinks a MRI is called for, and with it going on so long, I would get one as long as the OB cleared it.  If you were a week away from your EDD I'd say try and hold out but since you're still got a few weeks left it's better to be safe than sorry.

It may just be one of those things that will clear up after your LO is here.  But on the chance that it's something more serious, or can cause complications during labor/if you need a c-section, I'd rather know ahead of time.

  • I would do it too.  Atleast in hopes that you can enjoy those first moments with your new LO, and not with a pounding headache.  Plus, I would have the same worries about going into labor with something else serious going on.

  • I was on Nifedipine for a month and had terrible headaches from it. It is the #1 side effect. I wouldn't worry too much. Don't think a MRI is necessary but ask your OB. My headaches got worse the longer I was on the medicine and stopped immediately after I stopped taking it. GL!

  • If your OB clears it and says its safe I definitely would not wait. Especially since its been going on this long. What if it were something serious? I would get it even if just for peace of mind.

  • I had an episode with a TIA in December. I had two MRIs while in the hospital and was told they were perfect safe. They were worried that they couldn't get me in quickly enough and would have to do a CT scan, which could cause harm to the baby. Both my OB and my neurologist approved of the MRIs. My neuro is also pregnant and indicated she was being even more careful with my care because she was pregnant. She insisted on the 2nd MRI even though I was crying and begging not to do it (I'm very claustrophobic). I would definitely get it checked out.
