Our son let us know every 20 minutes that he needed a diaper. Our daughter does not. I remember taking DS to his 1 month checkup and the nurse asking how many diapers he wets a day. It was 46 diapers. She didn't believe me of course but I told her how he cries and she argued that I didn't need to change him every time he was wet.
So now we have DD and she will happily sit in poop if she is so inclined. Well this has led to horrendous diaper rash because I won't know she's pooped right after a change and don't look until it's been an hour. I feel awful that she has this rash and we're treating it but I'm wondering do I need to go back to the constant diaper changing? It's almost like she's 'sharting' every 20 minutes. Sigh. I guess I only change her every 2 hours. She goes through more diapers than that because when I change her she will poo or pee right after the new diaper gets on - sometimes I notice it right away so it gets changed immediately. This means one diaper change usually takes 3 diapers.
Sorry so long.

46 a day?? Does he ever sleep for a couple hours at a time or does he cry every 20 minutes around the clock? It does seem like a lot.
I change my daughter every feeding, and if she fusses in between or poops, which is only once a day. I would say about 12 diapers a day.

This exactly. We go through about 8ish diapers a day.
When we had a diaper rash issue early on, I began using CJ's BUTTer to prevent. It doesn't have zinc oxide like in traditional ointments but oatmeal and other natural ingredients (in the non-scented stick). It cleared up her rash and has prevented any redness from returning.
