D.C. Area Babies

Photo question

So, I would like to possibly get professional photos of the baby, although DH doesn't.  If you did, how old was the baby when you did them? Thanks in advance!

Re: Photo question

  • If you want the traditional newborn, sleeping baby photos, I believe that most photographers like to do them when the babies are 7-14 days old. Once the babies get older than that, it can be harder to get them to sleep on demand and get them into the poses for the beautiful sleeping baby photos. However, it doesn't mean you can't do photos after that; it just means that they may not be asleep for the photos.

  • I think the perfect time is right after the cord falls off so you can do some laying-on-the-tummy shots, so between 2-3 weeks old. Although both of my kids' fell off earlier than that, by 3 weeks, most fall off.

  • I prefer to do newborn sessions between 5-10 days old for the sleepiest shots and because the babies are more poseable.  Although my own DS2 was jaundiced until about 10 days so I did his just after that.  He was not quite as sleepy anymore so it was a bit more challenging but it can still be done with patience.  That said, I have had some 3-4 weekers that slept like champs and a week old that didn't sleep a wink...it all depends.

The other thing to remember is that many infants get baby acne between 4-6 weeks, some even earlier.  So I try to avoid that stage if possible.
