Baby Names

need some input!

DH and I had planned to name DD#1 Adele but at the last minute changed our minds and named her Clara. As soon as we found out we were expecting #2 we knew we wanted to use Adele and haven't seriously discussed any other names. I have loved the name for many years, especially because I never knew anyone with the name and felt like it was different, without being made up. I never made the connection to the singer until recently but of course she just won tons of Grammy's and her name is everywhere now. Its starting to bother me that everyone will assume we named her after the celebrity. I just need some honest opinions... would you go ahead with the name if you were in this situation? I just can't imagine this baby as anything but Adele but I'm not sure I want to hear, "oh like the singer?" every five seconds either... how much does this really matter?

thanks ladies!

Re: need some input!

  • It would not have occurred to me, but then I don't follow popular music.

It's a beautiful name, and I would say that if you love it, go for it. The connotation isn't a bad one, as far as I can tell.

  • We're in a similar situation with the name Adele. My first was suppose to be an Adele after her great grandmother but we changed our minds last minute. Now both girls have names that have noble in the meaning and want to carry that on with the third and honor another family member. Anyway, baby is coming this Wednesday, fresh after the Grammy's, and we're still planning on using it as a MN even though any time I mention it I get the response "Like the singer?". Irritating but, in a few years the association won't be there.

In conclusion....Go for it!! It is an awesome name!!

  • I only know of the singer because of this board.  I knew of the name long before that.  I don't think you'll get too many comments and who knows, she could be old news by this time next year.  I doubt anyone your child's age would make the connection growing up.

    Also, I think it's a great name.

  • I don't follow the top 100 anymore, but I've definitely heard of Adele A LOT. I think if you use it, you will here plenty of references to the singer. If that's going to bother you, don't use it. If you can live with it, use it.

  • Adele is a very popular singer and I don't suspect her 15 mintues are anywhere near over. I also think that the name itself is becoming more popular. As PP have suggested, if "Like the singer?" really bothers you then definitely don't use it. Otherwise, I think it is a lovely name.

  • I was named after an actress and it NEVER comes up. I some times tell people, but they never get the connection.  Oddly H has the same last name as said actress, but I didn't change my name.

  • I say go for it.  It is beautiful.  Also, plenty of people name their kids after singers, and she is a pretty good role model.  It's not like we're going for Whitney here (too soon?!??  Sorry!).

Also, Adele just announced she is taking a 5 year break from music and fame, so by this time next year, people will be on to something else.  It's not like you're naming her Beyonce.  Although I might be able to get behind that too (I'm sorry, Destiny's Child spoke to me on a personal level).

  • We thought about using it as a mn, but when we mentioned it to people they said "like the singer." So we decided to take it off the list.  While I like her music, I just didn't always want to hear, "like the singer?".

  • Well, I have a family member named Jeremiah. The "bullfrog" comments stopped after the first year and it never comes up. I have another family member named Forrest. The "Run, Forrest, Run!" comments stopped after the first 6 months and never gets brought up. I really think, even if you get a few comments in the beginning, as your child grows into a unique individual and "owns" the name, people will probably stop commenting/making the connection!
  • Just wanted to say my mn is Adele, and I absolutely love the name.  Go for it!
