Besides CS what else should I be aware of when the time comes?

Hi ladies!

I happened to speak with someone who mentioned the following: they not only settled out cs with their ex but their lawyer also had him take out a life insurance policy to make sure that if anything were to happen to the dad the baby would be taken care of in the future. I was going to take out an insurance policy on myself but this was something I didn't know about! Did anyone's lawyer obtain this for their lo too?

Anything else that you know of that I should be aware of? :)

I hope everyone is having a great day so far!

  • DDs dad did it on his own. He has it set to go to a trust until she's 21, with small payments to me for support. They receive social security benefits if something happens to the NCP. Taking out a life insurance policy is just an added layer.

Custody and visitation would be my biggest concern.

  • I actually asked my lawyer about this and he said that we could not require him to take out a life insurance policy with DS as the beneficiary.  I don't know if this is true in all states or not, but in MO it's a no go.  BD is not a young man, so I'm hoping his health holds out for the next 18 years, or we'd be looking at having to get social security, which I doubt would pay the same as what we get in CS.  He also has another child, too (though his mother is the beneficiary of BD's life insurance), but that child would probably have claim to SS as well.

I hope you can get BD to agree to it on his own, though.  I don't understand people who don't want to optionally look out for their kids best interest.
