Travel to New Orleans without a carseat?

Is it possible to travel from the airport to the French Quarter with a baby without a carseat?  We don't have a car since we live in a big city and so I don't know that I can safely get a carseat in and out of a cab.  It looks like there's a bus that goes to the midcity area and from there it would only be a few blocks to our hotel.  Does that seem like it would work?  Any other ideas?  Thanks!

Thanks!  And I wasn't going to put my LO in a car without a carseat.  I was just wondering if there was some sort of public transportation that was easy to take.    I'm in Chicago and we have trains and buses that will take you into the city from either airport.
