A Neighbor Vent

Obviously NAPR.

Right around the time Ari was born, our next door neighbors adopted a German Shepard. Well, they spent 0 time socializing, training,  or exercising  this poor dog. The lady mentioned they tried to walk him once or twice but he pulled on the leash. Umm, yeah, you have to work with them more than 1-2x on that. So dog ends up being an outside dog - with free run of the fenced backyard & not "tied out", but still. It tore the siding off part of the house, barked all the frickin' time, started becoming more & more aggressive, etc. After they received numerous complaints about the barking from neighbors, the dog was never seen again.

Well, about a month ago, I saw another German Shepard puppy sitting on their back deck, & I'm thinking "oh ***". What makes them think this will be any different? So I had to leave Rite (our retired Greyhound) outside for about an hour today while the carpet cleaner guy was here, & the Shepard was trying to chew threw & jump over the fence to get to Rite. Rite is 90+lbs & stands hip high on me but is easily scared by other dogs. He's been afraid to go in the backyard for the last few weeks - basically when the puppy got a bit bigger & more mean. Now puppy has been barking for almost an hour.

If you can't take proper care of a pet, don't get one. I really wish they would take the dog inside & like, play with it or walk it or something. I know it's more acceptable to leave dogs outside here in the South than what I'm used to, but oy vey.

Re: A Neighbor Vent

  • You would think that would make them feel bad. I feel  bad sometimes that our dogs usually prefer to be outside all day. And I feel REALLY bad that my little yorkie-poo can't seem to be kept in the yard.

I think the outside 24/7 thing is actually not as bad as the fact they just don't care for the dog at all, therefore it's going to end up with "behavior issues" just like the last one. Although I don't like the idea of pets being only outside.

  • Semi-related ironic neighbor story:

Our next door neighbors have 2 outside pit bulls, who get very little attention (except from my son who loves them) and they're apparently breeding them, they've had two litters of puppies so far (super cute). Anyway, the male barks a fair amount, but only usually when someone walks by on the path behind our yards, or when we're out playing in our yard and get too close to the fence.

Our neighbor behind us used to complain all the time about this dog (and any dog) and called animal control a couple times (once on us when I was nursing and couldn't get our dog to stay inside and stop barking).

Ok, finally the ironic part, the neighbor who calls animal control all the time got two dogs of his own and they bark ALL the time now! I'm very amused.

  • I think I can top you. My neighbors have THIRTEEN dogs. And they are the small yippy type. 8 or 9 of them are Maltese. They bark all the fricken time at everything that moves. All of them. At the same time. We built a huge privacy fence and the neighbors got pissed off at us and don't speak to us anymore.

We also live an a town were it is common to chain your dogs up and leave them outside. It's sad because they generally start out nice, but aren't socialized and then become aggressive. Poor dogs. But also sucks for the neighbors.

  • Oh that sucks.  Your poor dog!

On another note, YOU ARE PREGNANT!!!!  I know you already know that but I am not around much so I didn't, lol!  I am SO excited for you!!  Congratulations!!!

  • Wow, I would be so, so annoyed. You have every right to feel the way you do. I cannot stand it when people get a dog and then do nothing with it. Especially a highly driven working dog such as a GSD. That dog is likely bored out of it's ever loving skull!

    Poor Rite :(

I grew up in the south and live here again after 10 years in new england and still do not find it acceptable to leave your dog outside all the time. Why have a dog if you don't want to spend time with it, you know? Plus, southern summers are nothing to laugh about.

I spent a year advocating for a chained pit bull on the next island over. I drove by to check on her every other day, called ACO constantly if any funny business was going on (like it would drop to the teens at night temp wise, she had no hay, nothing, water was never changed, she was tangled up one evening, etc). I dropped hay off to the owners, who did spread it around for her. she was KU constantly. The roof of her dog house tore clean off during a bad storm one day. Called ACO again. finally they'd had enough. Not sure where the poor dog is anymore, but at least she's not living outside on a 6 foot chain 24/7 now.
