Feminine versions of masculine names

I understand naming a daughter after her a male family member. Josephine, for example, is a great name.

Today, I encounted the name Jameszella. The mother of a student. I'm not sure if this is some kind of smoosh name, a bad attempt to turn a male name into something girly, or if it's something else entirely.

Have you heard of any really bad feminine versions of masculine names?

  • I went to high school with a Woodisha, named for her dad, Woody. She also had two younger brothers, both named Woody (with different moms.) But yeah, Woodisha.

This reminded me! I taught an Antone and an Antonina. Brother and sister, both named for their Dad.

The only thing that I can think of when seeing this is Godzilla.  There's so many pretty girl names, why do that?!

  • My mind jumped also first to Godzilla, and then I thought Jameszella would be a great Dinosaur - T rex and Jameszella battled it out over a pesky zebrazella

  • Because Jamie just wasn't good enough. Geez!

  • Wow Jameszella is terrible, I remember stumbling across the name Ralphina somewhere.. Some names really should not be feminized.

  • I had a student named Karlonda, and her brother and father were Karl.

  • Jameszella makes my eyes itch... I hate girl names that are just boy names with an "a" on the end as it is... and like a PP said, they could at least go with Jamie a a somewhat-feminine version.

This doesn't totally fit the category, but there was a reporter on our local TV news named Rontina... I'm betting her parents were Ron & Tina. Still makes me cringe to think of it.

  • I had a friend named Shawnette growing up.  I'm not sure if she was named for her father or not (never met him).  I just always thought it was weird that she wasn't Shawna if mom liked a feminine version of Shawn so much.
