Clicky Poll: Allergy Testing

DD is on Neocate after allergy issues (unresolved by elimination diet) while breastfeeding and is doing great on that, but we can't shake the feeling that allergies are causing her chronic congestion (which has led to two separate rounds of antibiotics) and the problems we've been having with diaper rash, coincidentally after starting solids.

Both her pediatrician and GI doc say that allergy testing before a year can give incorrect results.  And, even if we did find that she has environmental allergies, they recommend stalling before putting her on an actual daily allergy med.

I agree with them about the meds, but it's frustrating not knowing if something easily removable from her life would help things.  Should we push for testing sooner or just ride out these next couple months and [sigh] be patient?  :)

  • I got Jacobs test at 9m and I am getting James' done then as well. Seems like a good time to me, since you start finger foods at 9m, so its better to know before then, IMO.

  • DD was skin tested at 11 months then blood tested 1 year later (and will be blood tested annually). Same exact results at both tests. I was SO GLAD to have answers as early as we did.

  • I got DD skin tested at 6 months and though, yes, there were some false positives and false negatives, it gave us something to go off of. I was glad to get the information, even though avoiding so many foods seemed impossible at the time. Because her reactions aren't severe my allergist gave us the go-ahead to do food challenges at home and she will be blood tested next month to verify our conclusions.
