Cloth Diapering

Bum Genius Question

We are registering for the Bum Genius cloth diapers. This may sound like a silly question but I could not find the answer anywhere on the internet.

How may of the actual diapers do I register for? They sell the inserts separately so I will register for extra of those. But, how many of the outside layer do I need? Obviously you can re-use the outside layer (unless they have a blow out, etc...) but I know I will need extras. I am compiling my registry and I want to make sure I put enough on there.

Any help would be great! This is my first time cloth diapering and I am a complete novice.

Re: Bum Genius Question

  • outside *layers... not layer. Sorry.

  • If you're registering for Bumgenius 4.0, you don't need extra inserts and you have to change the whole diaper, you can't reuse the outside. It's a pocket diaper, so it's just like a disposable.

If you're registering for Flips (Also made by the same company as the 4.0), then you can re-use the cover and use different inserts.

  • You can't reuse the outer layer with Bumgenius, they're a pocket. You might want extra inserts to double-stuff for naps, etc., but at this point I wouldn't stock up on them. You might find you like other materials like hemp or bamboo for extra inserts.

  • So, perhaps 25 diapers would be a good amount to register for?

Approximating 6 diapers a day... That would put me at a mid week wash.

  • Check out the FAQ's on this board...lots of great info there.

Most people wash every 2-3 days.  Also, most one size dipes don't fit right away, so many people go with other options for newborns...if you are wanting to start right away.  I think around 24 diapers is the amount most people think is comfortable for every other day washing once they are past the newborn stage.  30-36 for the newborns.

  • 24 would be good, but I wouldn't recommend getting 24 of one type of diaper before your LO even arrives.  You might not like them.  I bought 16 of them when I was pregnant and recently sold all but 2 because DD is sensitive to the fabric they use inside.

You don't need to register for extra inserts, but you might want some other inserts as options (hemp, bamboo.)

BG's are a pocket, like pp said.  That means you wash the outside and the insert with every use.

These won't fit at birth, so you will need something else for the first couple months.

Also, you will probably use more than 6 diapers a day.  I change DD every couple hours during the day, so we probably use about 8 diapers a day.  It was more before she started sleeping through the night.  We wash diapers every other day.  You don't want them sitting around dirty for more than 2 or 3 days.

  • Thank you all so much! This de-bunks all of the between the lines stuff for me. I am regristering for all of them... We won't open all until we are 100% sure they are the ones for us. that way we will have the option to take them back and exchange for something else.

I will probably go old school for the newborn and just use the cloth and pin technique.

    THANK YOU!

Have you heard of the snappi? Much easier than pins and you won't poke the baby
