I think it was pixy_stix that posted a link to this thread on babycenter about using fish tank ammonia remover to get ammonia out of diapers. https://community.babycenter.com/post/a23042415/ammonia_is_gone
Touted as a miracle product and claims that it should be safe on diapers/bums if rinsed well.
I am getting desperate to get rid of the ammonia in my dipes, have tried almost everything including stripping, changing detergents several times, putting more/less diapers in the wash, increasing frequency of washing, boiling all my diapers (which helped for a bit, but ammonia was back within a few washes). DS has red irritation in the wetzone after almost every change and diapers reek of ammonia (when he pees in them). We mainly use BG 4.0s but have started using prefolds and fitteds too thinking maybe he's sensitive to synthetics or that the natural fibers wouldn't hold on to ammonia as much (not true for us).
Thoughts? Has anyone here tried it?
Re: Ammonia Remover for fish, pixy_stix
Yes! It works!
Caveat: It will completely remove the ammonia for a while, but if you can't figure out the cause of the ammonia it will come back. You'll just have to keep treating your diapers.
Thanks! I think I'm going to try it.
I'll keep working on the ammonia issue and hopefully prevent from happening again. It seems like a lot of people have luck with tide if nothing else works and I'm hoping to keep that as a last resort. From reading, it seems like ammonia came back in about month with the ammonia remover, which is a lot longer than all the other methods I've tried.
