Baby Names

Too close to our cousin's baby name?

For a long time, my DH and I have liked the girl name Lianna Marie (a combo of our names,Levi and Savannah).  Then we found out one of his cousins named her daughter Liana (pronounced Li-ah-na).  Do you think these are too close?  I don't want her to think we copied, shes THAT cousin.  ;)

What do you think of the name Lianna?

  • Normally, I would say no.  But they are SO CLOSE and its an unusual name, so I would say yes. I would think YOU were THAT cousin.

  • That is such a bummer of a situation, as I love the name Lianna. it boils down to how often you see them, really....

Maybe 2-3 times a year.  Those 2 sides of the family don't get along that well...  And really, it's actually my MIL's cousin, but she's closer to our age.

  • oops, quoted the wrong post.  That's 2-3 times a year we see the cousin.  Sorry.

  • Its virtually the same name..  But I don't think it would hold me back if I loved it.  But I am definitely not THAT kind of girl- if someone close to me named their kid one of my kids names I would first be flattered that they liked it and second would never be so self-centered to think they Copied me.  I seriously don't get all the name stealing drama that goes on...

I think the name is just about the same.. so I would say come up with another name.. but you see them 2-3 times a year, and the families dont even get alone.. Id go for it if you love it..
  • If I loved a name it wouldn't matter to me.  When SIL's was talking about using our baby name (yes, she knew that is what we already picked but was having her baby 3 months ahead of us) I told her that she can do what she want but that won't change my decision on what to name my child.

O my goddness that would piss me off to all belief, I am not a fan of my boyfriend's sister at all to begin with but I would lose it on her if she started saying she was going to use our name, after knowing we picked it, just because she was having her baby earlier then ours. But we also see her all the time, like multiple times a week.

OP - If you love it and it obviously has such a strong meaning to you guys then use it. She's a distant relative, if it was your niece or something that would be different but it isn't like your name stealing, it is a logical and beautiful connection between your two names. If your cousin really would be so blind to take offense and not see that then I wouldn't give a damn about her feelings about it.

  • Just thought of something, if your torn between it being to close but still loving it do a different variation! What about LeAna or something? My BF went to college with a girl named that, I just can't remember the exact spelling she used, it was either Leana or LeAnna, or you could do first name Lee middle Anna and pronounce them together.

  • Pretty name but it's close.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of combining parents names to name the child.

  • It's essentially the same name. I'd advise against using it.

Same.  But  I'll go farther - it's not close, it's the same name, different pronunciation
