ruby has a big splinter in her thumb. none of it is sticking through the surface, so i cant find anything to grab onto. it's like the skin grew completely over it overnight. any suggestions on how to get it out? what happens if i leave it? she freaks out when i try to start digging, even if i promise her chocolate milk.

The only way to get it out is with a sanitized needle, tweezers and another adult =( I had to help do this for a fellow nestie once. It was a foot though. We had to swaddle her and then it still took the both of us holding her still to get it out.
You can try to leave it alone and it should grow out but the instant it starts to get red or show any signs of infection, it has to come out. You can ice it first to reduce the pain but as you've already experienced, they usually won't let you near it the instant they think you're going to mess with it so trying to ice only prolongs the process.
Honestly, unless it is REALLY bothering her, I'd just leave it. Throw a band aid on there and call it a day. Keep an eye on it and if it reddens (more than that normal, "Oh, there's a splinter in there" pink) or if it's causing her excessive pain, then I'd probably call the pedi.
But, things that don't belong in the skin usually work their own way out, eventually (even when skin has grown over).
thanks, ladies. i talked up the chocolate milk some more and put on yo gabba gabba. i was able to get a good grip on it while she was distracted and it came right out. it was way easier than i had expected once i got a hold of it with the tweezers.
it feels like it was a thin sliver of metal. i totally thought it was wood from the playground at school, but it was something metal. i'm glad i got it out too, bc her skin all around it was already pretty red when she showed it to me first thing this morning.

Get someone to help you hold her down and just get it with sterilized needle and tweezers, like Taytee said. Trying to be gentle is just going to prolong it and make the whole experience much worse. Things like this, you just have to just ignore their screams and get it done. I know it sucks, I had to hold Layna down and get a bee stinger out of her finger when she was 2. It was awful

Re: help with a splinter please
You could try to get her to soak her thumb and maybe the skin will bubble and peel?
We ended up going to the pedi for a splinter once that grew over. H was all no way mama. But the doctor had it out before he knew what was happening.

you could make colored ice cubes today and let her play with those and wait for her fingers to numb up and give it a go again?
just some food color and water and an ice tray!
Have you tried pajama soup? That's all I've got.
