Cradle Cap... Excema...

DD had a trip to the pedi yesterday, and saw the NP. She has had this funny raw like rough raised patch on the right side of her head for a week and a half now. It has little yellow scabbies in it that look like that clear ooze when it dries. I thought it was just a scratch, but it's gotten bigger and more raised. And then yesterday morning I noticed more patches on the back of her scalp, that hadn't been there the night before! It doesn't seem to hurt her or bother her at all though, but it looks nothing like the minor cradle cap she has, it's your standard yellow flakes, that I have been keeping under control with just regular shampoos and brushing. But that's what the NP chalked it up to, and I don't know if I agree. She also said it could be a little bit of excema, looks like no excema that I've ever seen but whatever I'm not a doc. Anyone's LO's have this?

Re: Cradle Cap... Excema...

  • Yes!! For over a month. We need to go back to the doctor. He also has bright red rash around his neck, arm creases, armpits, and groin. We use unscented everything, cloth diapers, etc. I even thought it was yeast, but the German pedi here said he thought it was Excema. So we are doing oatmeal baths and eucerin cream.

  • Aveno is good to use if LO has excema. What I've found that works better at getting the cradle cap off is one of those surgical scrub brushes. The more hair your LO has, the harder it seems to keep the cradle cap under control.

  • So Aveno is good? We're using J&J baby shampoo, and I was going to try switching it to see if that helps... The NP also sugested putting some aquaphor on the patches, and if that doesn't help a drop of selsum blue just on the patches and then if it's still a problem when she is a bit older we can do a full head shampoo with the selsum.

That is awful about it being everywhere! Maya had some really red sore patches in her armpits, I felt horrible it was obviously yeast that I had missed before :( it was after one of her baths about a week ago I lifted her arm while dressing her and saw and wiped away a whole bunch of white thick gunk... I'm crazy anal about really getting into her pits now during her baths.

  • My little guy has a patch of eczema behind his ear and I thought it was just an extension of his cradle cap. It just wouldn't heal though, no matter what I put on it. I finally figured out what it was and bought him some Aveeno baby eczema treatment and within 24 hours it looks a MILLION times better and seems to be healing finally.

His cradle cap is much different. It's just flaking and none of it ever oozes or looks painful. The eczema patch, at its worst, looked like an open oozing crusty wound. Poor little guy.

  • If you notice the patch weeping/oozing call your pediatrician.  It's usually a sign of infection.  My DS had horrible eczema as an infant and it got infected a few times.  He ended up needing prescription treatment.  If it isn't weeping, aquaphor does a great job at keeping it under control.  Avoid harsh rubbing on the patch because that can cause infections.

  • The redness in LO's creases is yeast!  My DD has had this ongoing issue since beginning of Jan.  We use jock itch cream and then hydrocortisone cream over top to sooth the irritation.  You also have to use a blow-dryer to make sure all the creases are really dry after bathing.  It works but you have to stay with it and watch that it doesn't reappear just when you think it's done.

We also battle excema and use the hydrocortisone cream for that too.  Plus we use aquaphor and eucerin for skin dryness.  I feel like we use every cream under the sun on DD's skin :-)

  • FYI- Our pedi told us to watch any skin irritations/infections because you don't want it to turn into a staff infection.  Pussing can sometime indicate staff.  Good luck!
