Hitting

My DS is just starting to hit, mostly if we are holding him and he doesn't want what we're saying or doing, he'll hit us instead of saying no (which he can and often does). Or if we offer him a cup of water, he'll smack it away.

We've been saying "No hitting. Be gentle." and demonstrating gentle touch, but this hasn't been working. In fact, he kind of thinks the word "gentle" means pet Mama's face.

Any ideas how we can discourage the hitting while still encouraging the expression of frustration or anger?

Re: Hitting

  • Keep showing gentle. Don't show emotion when he hits. If he can't say "no" yet, teach him how to shake his head no. It really will pass, if you are consistent in your approach. Both of my kids went through it, and it did end.
