Congratulations and welcome to the world Ellie Bea. How bitter sweet a day that was for you I'm sure (I'm sorry for your loss). I hope the nursing goes better for you and her both and that you are enjoying motherhood!
Great job on working on nursing. I had one flat nipple with DD and at first we thought DD was being lazy too. Then, I brought her to the hospital for a lactation consultation and they realized that she was a little like a premie (even though she was 10 days overdue) and she wasn't sure what to do with her tongue. They gave us some exercises to do with her tongue a few minutes before feeding using the nook (stroking the sides and then the middle of her tongue) to get her in the mood for nursing. After a few times of this, her latch got better and we got to decrease the use of the nook stroking. For my flat nipple, I would pump a minute or two to get the nipple more extended and at least get the milk to let down to encourage her. After 2-3 weeks, she didn't need any encouragement to go for my flat nipple side.
