Sleep Training Question - Desperation here

My 7 month old has no problem going to bed but staying asleep.  He was sleeping fabulous stretches for a while then out of no where waking at midnight then just recently waking at 10p.  So Basically he is barely down for an hour at a time and waking.  Also it is near impossible to put him back down, even after rocking him back to sleep.

H and I decided it's time to sleep train him,  We did CIO with our daughter but that was for going to sleep, she normally stayed asleep all night.  Son has no problem going down it's the multiple wakings that are killing us.

Is CIO an option for this kind of thing?  We are so tired and frustrated so we are looking for answers.  Thanks!

Re: Sleep Training Question - Desperation here

  • Yes  - CIO is used for training to help LO sleep through the night as long as he is ready (many of the books discuss that as well).

If I recall Ferber, Sleepyeasy Solution, Healthy Sleep Habbits Happy Child (Weissbluth) and Secrets of the Baby Whisperer all address this.

I'm on take 2 of sleep training coming-up, so I have no other advice in terms of which might be more effective for this - perhaps one of the ladies who used it for this can point you to one that they liked the best. I found Ferber and Sleepeasy Solution to be the most helpful - Ferber for information, Sleepeasy for coming up with a plan.

  • I did Ferber and it was hard but I knew that she was feed and clean and warm.   It totally is crappy for a few days but  be consistent and stick with it.
  • Like PP mentioned, yes, it can be done, we also used Ferber. You would use the same method you did for your daughter at bedtime, just for the night wakings, going in at intervals. It does make for a few long nights because it can be easy to go barging right in after only a minute or two at 3:00am if you are exhausted, but it is important to keep with the times intervals, and it should get better within a few days. • Our LO started doing this around 5 months, he would be sleeping so soundly and then wake up with a loud burst of crying. I thought what could this be, nightmares, gas, but then I started to notice a pattern. The nights that he fell asleep with us, either on the couch or while I was holding him were the nights he would wake up. I attributed this to an anxiety when he wakes up and we're not there. Since then I make sure to put him in his room as I see him start to get drowsy I kiss him goodnight, turn on his music and shut the door, at first he would cry for maybe1-2 minutes but now he falls right asleep and no more waking and crying. When he deos wake up, I can hear him he kind of sings to himself and falls right back to sleep.

  • Yes, our pedi said at 6 months being EBF, he could go at least 6 hours w/o being fed so if he woke up before 6 hrs had passed, we let him CIO.  He only cried for 20 minutes for a few nights and now he only gets up once to eat at 5am, then back to bed until 8a.
