Preemies

Intro

Hi Everyone,Although I have not had my baby boy at this moment, I am scheduled for a c- section tomorrow morning at 8:30am. I have several medical issues going on which include mild pre-e and cholestasis. I have also been diagnosed with GD. I have been stable and on hospital bedrest for two weeks now. My liver enzymes and uric acid levels continue to climb so they feel baby will be ok out rather then in! I did have the steroid shots for his lungs when I was first admitted. His growth scan done today is estimating him at 5lbs 5oz. Little stinker is also breech! The neonatologist did speak with my husband and I which made us feel a little bit better.Just wondering how long your preemies were in the nicu? When they were born and how much they weighed. Any advice you can give a first time mama in this sitution.

Re: Intro

  • Welcome, in advance, mama!  My DS was born at 35w6d and only had 5 days in a Special Care Nursery before he could come home.  Once we ruled out Respiratory Distress Disorder, he was very jaundice and needed to figure out how to eat.  It sounds like your LO will be of good size, so I am sending prayers for a healthy deliver and a short stay at the NICU. Good luck, and keep us posted!

  • GL tomorrow!

Every baby is different, but usually 34+ weekers are just feeders/growers.  My DD was born at 33w5d and was in the NICU for 9 days, the last few being only for jaundice.  She was breech as well and was 5 lbs 5 oz when she was born!  That's great that you got the steroid shots.  I didn't have enough time to get them, but luckily her lungs were okay.

I hope your section goes well and that your DS has a good transition into the world!

  • Best wishes tomorrow on a safe arrival of your LO.  34+ weekers typically do very well and it sounds like he is a great size.  My 28 weekers were 2lbs and 2.7lbs at birth.  They were in the NICU for 70 days, came home at 38 weeks weighing 5+ lbs.

  • Welcome!  I am a newbie as well.  My DS was just born on February 7th at 32 weeks, weighing 2 lbs. 9 oz.  I had IUGR so he is a real peanut for his gestational age.  So a 5+ pounder sounds huge to me!  He is 9 days old and will likely be in the NICU for another 3-4 weeks...he basically just needs to put on some weight at this point and grow grow grow!

    I had a c-section with DS as well...best wishes for tomorrow's delivery!
