Is this to tall to be changing table?

This dresser is perfect for our nursery...we don't need much extra drawer space because the closet is HUGE...

So I really like this, but I'm worried that it might be too tall to be the changing table. Everything we need will be on a shelf above the dresser, and all the diapers will stay in the top drawer, so I should never have to step away from the table (nor would I with the baby there..)

so....yay or nay?

  • it depends on how tall you are - are you going to be comfortable changing a baby on that? How does the table's height compare to your own?

If the height thing works for you, then do it. You are the one that needs to be comfortable and you know yourself and your needs best. Do what works best for you.

Also - am totally planning on getting the 8drawer version of that for ours at it is a great height and perfect for the room.

  • I'm sure it's right in front of me, but I don't see the measurements for it.  It doesn't look like it would be too tall by the picture.  It looks to be around the height of a dresser which I think is good.  A friend of mine used a taller chest that had like 4 or 5 drawers and I didn't think it was comfortable for using as a changing table at all.

  • It all depends on how tall you are. I love their 8 drawer version (which is the same height) and can't use it because I'm way too short, however I have friends who use it and love it.

  • I would go to IKEA & test it out. Stand next to it & pretend you're changing a baby. Have your H do the same.

  • I think it could work, but me and DH are tall. If you're 5 foot, then this might not be the changing table for you. However, with the idea you have a good pattern down, you won't be spending forever changing a diaper, a couple minutes, TOPS, so you won't have to worry about your arms getting tired from doing all the work in the air. If you come across the measurements, bring out a tape measure and compare it to something in your house. If you think you can do it, I'd say get it.

Also, on a side note, counter tops in the kitchen are pretty tall, but no one really seems to have a problem doing stuff on the counter, so I would think it would be the same concept.

hmm..I'm 67 inches, and the table is 38. So theres almost 30 inches from the top of my head to the table. So it will be just above my hips I think. I think the height for me will be ok. I guess I was more worried about whether or not its too tall for baby.

I was just looking at the changing table they sell though, and its 37 inches...so I think it would be ok. haha. Thanks ladies!!

I'm only 61 and it would have been really difficult to use for me. I like at your height it'll be fine!

  • According to the product info it's just over 38"...because I was curious I broke out a tape measure to see how tall that is, and it was right about waist level for me (I'm 5'3"). I think that might work, but I'm honestly not used to changing babies on a changing table--all my sibs change my nieces and nephews on the floor or on the bed, so that's what I've done most. I don't think I've used a changing table since I baby sat in high-school/college.

I agree with PPs who suggested either going to the store or standing next to something of comparable height to see how comfortable it would be for you.

This is exactly what I WANT to do, but the closest Ikea to me is 4 hours away. =/

How tall is the highest setting on your ironing board? You could set it for that height and "practice".

  • we are getting the 8 drawer version of this which is the same height. I think it will be a good height for us. I've seen these dressers in a lot of nursery pictures on-line so i'm guess it works for a lot of people.

  • I think you should be fine while LO is not moving too much. Most of my friends gave up the changing table/ dresser when LO was more active and started changing them on the floor or bed.

  • It's pretty popular (on blogs and pinterest at least) to use the Hemnes as a changing table. We're going to use an Ikea product as well for a changing table, and before we made the 3 hour trek to the closest one, I measured on the wall and went through the motions of changing a baby to make sure it was comfortable for us. I'm a dork and was kind of embarrassed when h caught me changing an imaginary baby on an imaginary table!

  • Nice choice Wink Thats the exact dresser we chose for baby's change table only in the dark brown colour. We have it set up with a change pad on top, and it is tall but not too tall for comfort. I guess it depends on how tall you are as I have a girlfriend whos shorter than me that found it was too tall for her so she now changes baby on the floor. I am 5.5 1/2 and its perfect for me!

Its a great dresser! Has more than enough room for change pad on top as well as a little basket for diapers, cream, wipes, etc.

Turns out my height converts to 66 inches so you should be fine!

I've had my eye on this dresser too!  My question is all of the "baby" dressers come with the attachments to keep the changing pad in place.  When you go with a standard dresser, I would assume you need put something in place so the pad doesn't move, right?  What do you use?  (FTM, obviously)  :)

  • I don't know. I think you would have to see it in person to decide if it would work or not.
