What does your kid eat?

What does your kid eat? How much? How often?

Ben is 4. It seems like every hour I hear "Can I eat something?"  He is offered three meals a day and two snacks. I think he's eating plenty, but maybe not?

You would think I'm starving him, the way he goes on about what to eat all the time.  He's not like this at preschool and he's not like this on the weekends (it seems.)  We're plenty busy so I don't know if this is boredom eating. Does that even start at this age?

Ugh. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Re: What does your kid eat?

  • My almost 5 year old has weeks where he will eat ALL the time. I just attribute it to a growth spurt and I keep on feeding him. But, my rule is that if you are hungry when it's not a designated meal/snack time then you have to either pick a fruit, vegetable or nuts. That way, I know that he is really hungry as opposed to just wanting to eat junk.

  • DS eats:

Bfast- waffle, pancake or french toast, fruit (usually strawberries, or banana) and milk.

Snack- dry cereal, crackers, goldfish, fruit, etc. with water usually.

Lunch- Boars Head Bologna or Boars Head turkey, half a grilled cheese, something crunchy (Pirates Booty, goldfish, puffs, etc), fruit, string cheese, milk, sometimes something sweet (Nilla wafer, small cookie, fruit snacks,. etc)

snack after nap: ritz or goldfish, string cheese, banana, etc.

Dinner- what ever I cook, or, chicken nuggets, mac n cheese or perogies, mixed veggies, micky mouse cheese, milk.

Ish.  It varies some days, but that's pretty average for us.  If he asks for anything to eat close to a meal, I'll just move up his dinner or talk him into waiting a little while until the meal.

  • Will is almost three and he's (IMO) a terribly picky eater...he generally will only eat "kid" food and because we have a hard time getting him to gain weight, I almost always cook 2 meals for dinner. This is a typical day for him:

    Breakfast - 2 eggs & a banana or pancakes/french toast/waffle & a banana
Snack - Berries or a baby food fruit pouch and crackers or string cheese
Lunch - Grilled cheese (whole sandwich, no crust), 2 hot dogs, a few slices of lunch meat, or mac & cheese with some sort of fruit. I offer a veggie, but he never eats it.
Snack - He generally isn't hungry in the afternoons, but if he is, I'll make popcorn, PB&J, or he'll get another piece of fruit
Dinner - He will not eat unless it's a repeat of lunch - PB&J, Grilled Cheese, Mac & Cheese, Hot Dogs, chicken nuggets, etc. & fruit/applesauce. Again, I offer a veggie, but he rarely eats it.

A couple times a week, he'll get a sweet treat after dinner.

I am not strict at all about meal times. He hasn't gained much weight at all since his 2 yr appointment (about 2 pounds), so if he's willing to eat, I'm willing to give it to him!

  • H is going to be four in a few weeks. Currently H goes to the pull out pantry and asks for stuff a few times after school before dinner. Two weeks ago, not the case. It comes in waves.

Breakfast (lazy tired pregnant chick): waffles (with pb or sun butter no syrup or jelly on school days just in case) or homemade oatmeal, fruit and milk.

snack: at school fruit and something crunchy

lunch: currently obsessed with heart shaped sunbutter and strawberry jelly sandwiches (seriously the entire month so far he's asked for that)

cheese cracks (organic version of ritz with some cream cheese and cut out colby jack and turkey shapes)

fruit (usually blueberries and strawberries) and a yoghurt.

sometimes the cheese crackers get changed for something else crunchy and sometimes I add dried fruit too

snack: fruit and cheese crackers or veggies and dipdip sometimes another heart shaped sandwich or he picks out a cliff bar and some fruit. It's pretty much his choice

dinner: whatever we're eating. Sometimes he takes left overs to school for lunch

he's not picky or anything and it's usually 3 squares and 2-3 snacks a day. sometimes we have special treats (stop for a cupcake or cookies) and sometimes ice cream type dessert, but usually he just wants fruit for dessert.
