Cloth Diapering

Detergent when prepping diapers?

I have decided to try cloth diapering and my first group of diapers arrived today. Yay!   I have not been able to find a cloth diaper safe detergent locally, so I ordered some online.  It has not arrived, but I am anxious to start prepping.  All the diapers are all various pockets or AIO diapers and I was wondering if I need to use detergent when prepping.

TIA!

Re: Detergent when prepping diapers?

  • Yes, I would use a small amount to prep to get rid of any manufacturing residuals. Also, if you have any natural fiber diapers or inserts (cotton, hemp, etc), you'll want to prep those separately from everything else to get rid of the natural oils that can cause repelling. There's more info about all of this in the FAQ at the top of the page if you haven't already seen it.

  • Thanks.  I guess I should probably be patient and wait for the detergent to arrive.  I have read the FAQ.  I am so glad this board took the time to put those together.  It is so helpful for us newbies.

  • Thanks for the link.  I had thought about making my own, but all the recipes I found contained either borax (which messes up my washer) or fels-naptha (which irritates my skin).

This is great. I have all three ingredients on hand.  I am mixing some up and pre-washing tonight.
