Zofran users come in! How are you pooping?!?!

I used Zofran during last pg. and had horrible constipation. I tried to avoid it this pg. but finally gave in to see if it would help. It has helped some. But now I feel like my intestines are full of dried cement. I take a Colace with every Zofran pill and I've been eating Fiber One bars and trying to eat lots of fruit etc. But holy moly! After a huge push session last night I was able to produce 3 little rabbit turds. Seriously? I was hoping it would be better this time around.

How are you ladies pooping? Are you pooping? If so, please share your magical solution.

  • I have just been dealing with the constipation and it sucks. I was on the toliet last night for 2 hours...one and off. I hate it.

I'm about to ask for Zofran :(

I am blessed to have inherited crazy nausea during pregnancies. It kicks in early, hard and, with my last one, never really went away. I remember feeling the nausea magically disappear when I delivered the placenta with DD. Somehow I thought a 2nd time around it might be different. But when it kicked in at 4 1/2 weeks and just kept getting more and more intense I started trying everything in my power to try.

I've been getting acupuncture 2x a week and Vitamin B injections 2-3 times a week. Taking Benedryl and B6 as well as Vitamin K. Eating every 40 minutes etc. etc. And still barftastic. So I finally caved and asked my naturopath for a Zofran Rx. He knew I was seriously miserable to ask him for a western med of that caliber and agreed. It has toned the nausea WAY down. Much more than last pg. However, the constipation is almost instantaneous.

It's totally worth a try, and I've heard some people don't actually get the constipation. But even if you don't use it every day, having it as a standby is sort of a nice option.

I hope it works for you!

  • I've been using Zofran for a few weeks now and it has helped wonders. i can actually eat now. However going to the bathroom is a chore.

I started drinking prune juice every other day and it did help a bit but i never felt like it was a complete sucess.

For valentines day we went to a steak house and since I cant even handle the smell of meat right now i just had a huge salad. the following day i went to the bathroom and i felt completly cleaned out.

  • My bowl movements are horrible. I have been taking colace (the walmart brand) and it is not doing a darn thing. My stools have started to become bloody, so I called back to the doc yesterday and asked if I should be worried about the blood and if there is anything else I can take to possibly help. They suggested I switch from the colace to a fiber drink mix (like metamucil). I was not able to make it to the store yesterday so I am not sure if the drink mix is going to work, but I sure hope it does.
  • The title of your post made me LOL.

That being said, I feel for you ladies and what you've said has helped me out.  I'm going to ask for a prescription for this tomorrow, (my M/S was AWFUL, but seems to have subsided, but I'd still like some Zofran on standby.)

At least now I know what the ramifications are if I choose Zofran over nausea!  Best of luck girls!

And when I go & to me it feels like yay i did it....only to see its not all that what it felt like was coming out. =-/ but i try & try nothing, sunday I dont know what it was but that was the first time I was able to go! But i kept on going & going so that was a relief but now I'm back to the same ol thing nothing.....So I'll need to ask my dr for some help on this issue.

  • I'm not on Zofran, but I was incredibly constipated with DD, and now have an anal fissure. It is intensely the most painful thing you will ever experience...every time you poop. WAY worse than hemorrhoids. Most of the time they are caused by straining too hard. Girls...I know constipation feels like the worst thing in the world, but do WHATEVER you can not to push too hard with bowel movments. I changed my ENTIRE diet to fiber and tons and tons of water. I still take a stool softner, even just with my prenatal vitamins, and have already been constipated this time around several times. I eat 4 prunes a day (2 in the am and 2 after dinner) and eat as much fiber and drink as much water as possible. That is the only thing that has helped me. Also, I went on Miralax for a while, but that was after having DD, so I'm not sure if it's safe during pregnancy. Hope it gets better!

  • I was on Zofran for a week and COULD NOT have a bowel movement for 10 days. I didn't realize it was the Zofran until I researched it more. I told my doctor and he switched me from Zofran to Reglan. I am convinced that Reglan is a placebo drug because it seriously did not do a thing. The zofran, though it tasted nasty, did work very well for about 2 or 3 hours. You can only take it every 6 hours though so there was still the in between time. I actually got increasingly sick while on zofran (during the in between hours) so I figured the intensity was going up from being constipated (Constipation can cause nausea and vomiting), so I stopped taking both drugs, I'm now pretty regular and i am not vomiting as much (I was at 5 or 6 times a day, now at twice a day). I still have all day nausea but i can say that it is a lot more mild now.

  • I threw up all last weekend and started taking Zofran after I couldn't take it anymore. I have not gone #2 since (5 days) and I'm miserable. I feel so bloated and uncomfortable, I finally just said I'd rather deal with the m/s than be so constipated and I stopped taking it yesterday. I have been trying everything - drinking tons of water, eating fiber cereal, prunes, etc - and it is still so hard to go. I'm hoping after a couple more days off the Zofran I will feel better.

  • After trying several other things with only moderate success, my doctor told me to take magnesium. I take 2 or 3 magnesium a day (based on whether I remember all three) - and it is a magnesium that only says 1 a day. It plus my normal amount of fiber has made ALL the difference.

This may be icky, but after all the blood sweat and tears that has gone into my pooping the last month or so, I had a perfectly formed perfectly normal poop the other day and I actually had to call my husband in to see. He was so proud.

Miralax is safe during pregnancy. The question is whether you can get it down or not. ;)

Also, lots of luck with the anal fissure. I have had two anal fistulas, which required two surgeries. OMG painful. I always worry when I have weird bowels now (though the fistulas in my case were caused by....ongoing spasmic diarrhea caused by metformin, not so much pushing).

  • I had the same issue.  I seriously did not have more than a few rocks for two weeks!  Here's what I did:

One morning, I decided that I would eat nothing but prune juice, fruit, fruit juice, yogurt, water, and sprite until I had a decent BM.

After three large glasses of prune juice, a box of blueberries, two oranges, a few glasses of orange juice and some V8 Fusion, I could not stop going to the bathroom. It was amazing.  Party!!!

I'm drinking a glass of prune juice in the morning and in the afternoon to maintain it.

    Good Luck!

  • I've been taking it since Monday and have had very mild constipation with taking one colace a day.

    Sorry I'm no help :(

  • same boat- I eat prunes (dried) like 3 or 4, then I drink milk of magnesia in the afternoon, then 3 colace every night.  I go every 2-3 days.
  • Thanks for the ideas ladies! I will be giving many of them a try. I have been pooping at least a little each day. After reading these comments I realize that makes me pretty regular compared to a lot of you on Zofran. Guess I will try to find solace in that! LOL
