How hard is it to PT for naps?

I'm going to have a mini panic today about being "behind" with PTing.  DD has no interest in sitting on the potty, but we have to have her PTd for naps too to start preschool in the summer.  Yikes!  I assume when we first start PTing we just do waking hours, right?  Do you still diaper for naps and bedtime, or do you have to switch to Pull Ups from the start?  How long do you wait for the kid to "get it" before attempting to go diaper-free for naps?  Does it depend on the kid and how long she takes to wake up dry from naps?

I have no idea what to expect, so any and all stories are welcome :)

Re: How hard is it to PT for naps?

  • We had to use pull-ups during the day at DC b/c they won't take kids who are PTign to the bathroom in diapers. So DD was in pull-ups for a while before fully being PTed.

Definitely take care of the waking hours 1st but start the routine of using the potty right before naps and bedtime.

  • Well, I am no expert and will be curious to see what others say, but here's what we are doing.  We PT DD (2.5) about a month ago by putting underwear on her and telling her to let us know when she had to go pee.  She had a lot of accidents the first day, but then she started doing much better.  We have Dora pull-ups and we told her it is her "sleeping undies" so she naps and does overnights in the pullups.  I just thought putting her back in diapers would be inconsistent.  Plus, she has a younger brother and she likes to say, "Only Brother wears diapers, I wear undies."  We also have a book about "shiny potties" and "pretty undies" so she loves the idea of thinking she is wearing undies.

For naps and for overnight, she mostly wakes up dry, though not always.  Like I said, its only been a month.  She usually sleeps about 12 hours.  But last night about 3 hours into her sleep, she woke up saying she had to go potty and I took her and she went a good amount.  She is still in a crib, so I am not doing anything about teaching her how to handle going on her own.

Also, the poop training seems to be a whole different thing--I posted about that last week and got some great advice here.

Good luck---I found PT to be the thing I feel most clueless about so far.

  • Once Maggie went in the potty she stayed dry for naps and bedtime but I did put her in a pull-up for a few weeks/months because I was scared of the accidents.  If she stayed dry I just reused the pull up for a few days.  For her it was like once she knew what to do she just held it and didn't go in the pull-up.  Honestly Maggie was easy which makes me dread doing it with Molly - she is probably going to be PT'ing until she is 4.
  • From a very young age, DD rarely peed or pooped during the night or naps so it was not a big deal to leave her in underwear during those times.  We do have a waterproof mattress cover on her bed just in case though.  It was a 4 month process potty training her though.  I keep on hearing 1 day success stories like Tracy and then think about all the time we spend using the little green steam machine (god bless them) on our carpets...  For DD what finally made everything click was peer pressure and time.  She wanted to be a big girl and only wear panties so she got very good at timing herself to her pre-schools bathroom times.  Making the transition from timed bathroom breaks to recognizing her own cues was a much longer process.  Ultimately for poop training we had to use rewards - an accident free day means a treat after dinner.  It works.  DD wakes up talking about what treat she wants that evening.
  • We're probably the exception to the rule here, even though DS was PT'd around age 2 for waking hours.  We put a pull-up on him for naps.  I'd say he's dry about 75% of the time but not always.  It's more for my convenience because changing the sheets on his bed at 9 months pregnant is no easy feat. At night we put him in an overnight diaper.  There is zero chance the pull up would handle his massive peeing. I have no idea how we're going to overnight PT him, but it isn't happening any time soon (at least until our next one STTN). I do think he could easily be PT'd for naps (particularly if we stop letting him have any liquids an hour before) but I just haven't wanted to deal with that right now.  The good thing is, his new room has a bathroom inside of it, so technically when he is ready to use the bathroom at night, he'll be able to do it all by himself and won't even wake us up.

  • We went diaper free for naps pretty quickly, but he was a year older than your DD.  He was able to go longer than his typical nap without needing to pee, so we just went for it.  The first few days, he didn't nap b/c he was afraid of wetting the bed, and instead went to try and pee about 4,000,0000x during his naptime.  After that, he got over it.

This makes me hope that my Maggie will be easy, since Conrad is still requesting diapers every time he poops and he'll be 4 in April.  :-/
