My grandmother's name was Madaline. (Pronounced mad-a-lynn.) We were very close, DH and I even got married on her and my grandfather's wedding anniversary.
I would love to use this name, but am torn on the spelling.
Her parents were recent German immigrants, they most likely either didn't know the "correct" spelling, or that is how it was spelled in the region they came from (don't really know).
My name is Kaylin so I have toyed with just leaving the "e" off the end, ending up with Madalin, but I am afraid people will think I am crazy.
I don't particularly care for the traditional spellings because they makes me think of Mad-a-liiine, I don't like that pronunciation.
Thoughts from some un-biased people out there?
Re: Name Issue...
I thought Mad-a-liiine right away, but I wouldn't change the spelling. It's a beautiful name, and even more so that it has family significance. GL!
Do you know the gender already?
Proud Mama to cleft cutie
There are so many funky spellings for names, I say go for it!
I'm Leanne.
Leigh-An
Leagh-Ann
Lianne
You get the idea... I've probably seen 10 different spellings. If you use Madalin, you'll never ave confusion over how to say it!
I'm actually using the spelling of Madelynn if I have a girl. My great grandmothers spelling of her name was Madeline....and I'm afraid of people pronouncing it Mad-a-liiiine. Because I don't particularly like that pronounciation.
I got tons of crap for wanting to spell Zoey with two O's. People were saying it looked like "Zoo-ey" not "Zoh-ee". I would do what you want. If we have a girl I'm naming her Zoey Raelynn (husband like Zoey not Zooey so I had to compromise), Raelynn was made up from my middle name, and mom's nick name, but I toyed with the spelling as well...my middle name is "raye" not "rae" but I thought rayelynn looked silly so I played with it. If you get too many weird comments just play with the spelling more like...
Madalynn, Madelyn, Madalin, Madelynn...just have fun with it!
Thanks everyone! I feel much better now about leaving it Madaline.
We are team green so no, we do not already know if we are having a girl. Just tossing around names to get two of each gender that we can agree on.
